What is a Vistadome Coach?
A Vistadome coach is a specially designed railway car aimed at tourists and nature lovers, turning a simple train journey into a sightseeing experience. These coaches, manufactured by the Indian Railways' Integral Coach Factory, feature large, panoramic
glass windows, transparent glass roof panels, and an observation lounge for unobstructed views. Inside, passengers can find seats that rotate 180 degrees, allowing them to face the direction of the best scenery. With a seating capacity of 44, the air-conditioned coaches also come equipped with a GPS-based infotainment system and Wi-Fi connectivity, blending modern comfort with the beauty of the outdoors.
The Scenic Route and Key Attractions
This new service connects two major temple towns, Madurai in Tamil Nadu and Guruvayur in Kerala. The journey's main highlight is the picturesque ghat section between Sengottai and Punalur. Passengers will travel through the misty hills and lush green landscapes of the Western Ghats, including the stunning Aryankavu Pass. The route is famous for its dramatic curves, numerous tunnels, and historic bridges, such as the 13-arch Kazhuthurutti bridge, offering postcard-worthy views at every turn. This initiative makes the train journey itself a key part of the travel experience, especially for those interested in nature and photography.
Schedule, Timings, and Train Numbers
The Vistadome coach will be attached to the Madurai-Guruvayur Express (Train Nos. 16327/16328) on a temporary basis. The trial period is set from October 22, 2026, to mid-January 2027. The service will not run daily. For Train No. 16327 from Madurai to Guruvayur, the coach will be available on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, starting October 22, 2026, until January 15, 2027. For the return journey, Train No. 16328 from Guruvayur to Madurai will feature the coach on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays, running from October 23, 2026, to January 16, 2027.
Fares and How to Book
Booking for this premium experience is now open. Tickets can be reserved through the IRCTC website (www.irctc.co.in) or at railway station reservation counters. When booking online, passengers should look for the 'Executive AC Vistadome' or use the class code 'EV'. The fare structure depends on the distance travelled. The basic fare starts at around ₹515, while the cost for the entire end-to-end journey from Guruvayur to Madurai is approximately ₹1,875. Due to high demand, initial bookings filled up quickly, with some weekend services already on a waitlist, so planning in advance is recommended.
The Purpose of the Trial Run
This Vistadome service has been introduced on a trial basis to gauge passenger response and operational feasibility. Southern Railway officials have indicated that the future of the service—whether it becomes a permanent fixture—will depend heavily on its popularity and the volume of bookings received during this temporary period. The strong initial demand is a positive sign for rail tourism enthusiasts hoping to see the service extended beyond January 2027. This trial represents a significant step in boosting regional tourism between Tamil Nadu and Kerala by leveraging the area's natural beauty.
