Malaysia: 30 Days of Tropical Bliss
Malaysia offers visa-free entry for Indian citizens for up to 30 days, a policy extended until the end of 2026. This makes it an excellent choice for a spontaneous trip. All you need is a valid passport, proof of accommodation, return flights, and a completed
Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) before you arrive. For a 5-day itinerary, the island of Langkawi is a perfect fit. Known as the Jewel of Kedah, it is a UNESCO Global Geopark that combines stunning natural landscapes with a relaxed, tourist-friendly atmosphere. Spend your days at Pantai Cenang, the island's most popular beach. It’s a two-kilometre stretch of sand with plenty of hotels, restaurants, and water sports operators. The sunsets over the Andaman Sea are spectacular here, and the beach road comes alive after dark with bars and eateries. Langkawi's night markets, or 'pasar malam', are a cultural and culinary highlight. These markets rotate locations daily. A popular choice for tourists is the Temonyong Night Market, which runs every Thursday and is just a short walk from Pantai Cenang. Here, you can feast on authentic Malay dishes like grilled seafood, satay, and nasi lemak for just a few ringgit.
Thailand: The Land of Smiles Awaits
Thailand remains a top destination for Indian travellers. As of September 15, 2026, a visa-exemption scheme allows Indians to enter for tourism and stay for up to 30 days. This is a reduction from a previous 60-day period, but 30 days is more than enough for a fantastic short holiday. The visa on arrival option that was briefly considered has been withdrawn, meaning entry is free and straightforward at the airport. Phuket, Thailand's largest island, is an ideal base for a 5-day trip. It offers a dazzling array of beaches, from the bustling and energetic Patong Beach to the more relaxed Kata and Karon beaches. Spend your days swimming, sunbathing, or trying out activities like jet-skiing and parasailing. When night falls, Phuket’s markets come alive. For a blend of culture, shopping, and food, head to the Phuket Sunday Walking Street Market in Old Town, known locally as 'Lard Yai'. Set against the backdrop of charming Sino-Portuguese buildings, you’ll find local crafts, live music, and an incredible variety of street food. For a trendier vibe, the Chillva Night Market, built with colourful shipping containers, offers fashion, food, and live bands.
Indonesia: Island Hopping in Paradise
While not completely visa-free, Indonesia offers a very convenient Visa on Arrival (VoA) for Indian citizens, valid for 30 days and extendable for another 30. You can obtain this at the airport upon arrival for a fee (approximately IDR 500,000) or apply for an e-VoA online beforehand to save time. This simple process opens the door to the world's largest archipelago. Bali is the classic choice for a reason. For a 5-day trip, you could focus on the southern part of the island. Base yourself in Sanur for a more relaxed, family-friendly vibe with calm waters and a lovely beachfront promenade. The days can be spent exploring nearby beaches, trying some gentle water sports, or simply enjoying the seaside cafes. For a livelier scene, Kuta offers a classic holiday town feel with its active beach and vibrant nightlife. Bali's night markets are a feast for the senses. In Sanur, the Sindhu Night Market (Pasar Malam Sindhu) transforms from a quiet daytime market into a bustling food court in the evening. It’s a clean and organized spot where you can sample authentic Indonesian dishes like sate ayam (chicken satay) and mie goreng (fried noodles) alongside locals and other travellers.
