The Path It Takes
One of the first and most crucial clues is an object's orbit. Natural bodies like asteroids and comets follow predictable paths shaped by the sun's gravity, typically orbiting in the same plane as the planets. Their orbits are usually elliptical. In contrast,
space junk often has a more chaotic or distinctly artificial path. It might be in a very circular Earth-centric orbit, or a polar orbit designed for surveillance satellites, which is rare for natural objects. Astronomers can rewind an object's trajectory to see where it came from. If the path traces back to a known satellite launch or a specific point in the crowded Low Earth Orbit, it's a strong sign of being human-made debris.
What It’s Made Of
The composition of an object is a dead giveaway. Astronomers use a technique called spectroscopy, which analyzes the light reflecting off an object's surface. Different materials absorb and reflect unique patterns of light, creating a spectral 'fingerprint'. Natural asteroids are typically made of rock, various minerals like olivine, and sometimes ice. Their spectra look very different from artificial objects. Space junk, on the other hand, is made of metals like aluminum and stainless steel, solar panel materials, and even flecks of paint. If spectroscopy reveals signatures of industrial materials, scientists know they are looking at a piece of our own spacefaring history.
How It Shines and Tumbles
The way an object’s brightness changes over time provides hints about its shape and rotation. An asteroid is usually an irregular lump of rock, and as it tumbles, its brightness changes in a complex, uneven pattern. Artificial objects, however, often have distinct, regular shapes—like flat panels or cylindrical rocket bodies. As these objects tumble through space, they can produce very regular, repeating flashes of light, much like a spinning mirror catching the sun. An unusually stable or predictably flashing light curve can strongly suggest something manufactured. Sometimes, the object's colour can also be a hint; one known piece of space junk, a discarded rocket body from 1966, was found to be much redder than most typical asteroids.
Speed and Weight
An object's velocity can tell a story about its origins. Objects travelling at extremely high speeds might be interstellar visitors from outside our solar system, like the famous 'Oumuamua. Space junk, however, tends to travel at speeds characteristic of objects in Earth's orbit, roughly 8 km/s. Another subtle clue is how the object reacts to the gentle push of sunlight, known as solar radiation pressure. A dense, solid asteroid is barely affected. But a piece of space junk, like a hollow rocket stage or a lightweight fragment of insulation, has a large surface area for its low mass. This makes it more susceptible to being pushed around by solar radiation, causing it to deviate slightly from a path governed purely by gravity—an anomaly that astronomers can detect.
