The festive season brings the joy of heading home for Diwali, but it also means navigating the immense rush on Indian Railways. To ensure your journey is safe and smooth, a little preparation and vigilance can go a long way on crowded platforms.
Plan Ahead, Arrive Early
The key
to a stress-free journey begins before you even leave for the station. During the festive season, trains are invariably overbooked. Book your tickets well in advance to secure a confirmed seat. Before leaving home, double-check your train's schedule and PNR status. Heavy road traffic and long queues at station entry points are common, so plan to arrive at the station at least an hour early. This prevents the last-minute panic that can lead to accidents, like attempting to board a moving train. Keeping your ticket and ID handy will also ensure a smoother entry and boarding process.
Navigating the Platform Crush
Railway platforms during Diwali can be overwhelmingly crowded. Once at the station, your first priority is safety. Always use foot overbridges or subways to change platforms; never cross the tracks as it is extremely dangerous. Find your coach's designated stopping point on the platform display boards and wait there, staying well behind the yellow safety line. Keep your luggage, and especially children, close to you and away from the platform edge. When the train arrives, allow passengers to deboard first before you attempt to board. Pushing and shoving can cause falls and injuries, so it is safer to wait for the crowd to thin slightly. To manage the rush, railways often set up holding areas to regulate the flow of people onto platforms.
Secure Your Luggage and Valuables
Crowded trains are a prime environment for theft. Travel as light as possible to make your luggage easier to manage. It is highly advisable to secure your bags with a chain and lock, fastening them to the hooks provided under the lower berths. Keep your most valuable items—such as your wallet, phone, laptop, and any jewellery—in a smaller bag that you can keep with you at all times, not in your main luggage. Avoid displaying expensive gadgets or large amounts of cash. Using digital payment methods for purchases at stations is a safer alternative to carrying a lot of cash.
Stay Alert and Aware of Your Surroundings
Vigilance is your best defence against opportunistic crime. Be wary of overly friendly strangers. Politely refuse any food or drink offered by co_passengers you don't know, as there have been incidents of passengers being drugged and robbed. For meals, rely on home_cooked food, authorized vendors on the platform, or IRCTC's e_catering services. Always check that the seal on any packaged water bottle is intact before buying it. If you notice any suspicious activity, an unattended bag, or someone carrying inflammable items, report it immediately to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) or the Government Railway Police (GRP). The railway helpline number 139 is available for any security concerns.
Prohibited Items: Know What Not to Carry
For the safety of all passengers, Indian Railways strictly prohibits carrying certain items. Flammable and explosive materials pose a significant fire risk in a crowded train. This list includes firecrackers of any kind, kerosene, gas cylinders, stoves, and acid. Carrying these items is a punishable offence. Railway authorities conduct enhanced luggage checks during the festive season to enforce these rules. Cooperating with these checks and ensuring your own luggage is free of prohibited items contributes to a safer journey for everyone.
Onboard Safety and Courtesy
Once you have boarded and settled in, continue to observe safety precautions. Keep your luggage clear of the aisles to prevent tripping hazards. Avoid standing near open train doors, especially when the train is in motion. If you are travelling at night, an upper berth is often considered a safer choice as it offers more privacy and is less accessible to aisle movement. Share your travel details, including the train number and your coach and seat number, with a family member or friend so they can track your journey. Being considerate of fellow passengers by keeping noise levels down also makes the journey more pleasant for all.
