What Exactly Is Changing?
Effective September 2, 2026, two Vande Bharat Express trains departing from Varanasi will now leave 10 minutes earlier than their previous schedule. This change, prompted by operational reasons, only affects the departure time from Varanasi itself. The
arrival times and the schedule at all subsequent stations on both routes will remain unchanged. While a 10-minute shift might seem small, it’s a critical update for passengers who plan their arrival at the station with little time to spare.
The Affected Trains and New Timings
The schedule revision applies to two popular services heading to Ranchi and Deoghar. Passengers booked on these trains should take careful note of the new timings to avoid any last-minute chaos. The first train is the Varanasi-Ranchi Vande Bharat Express (Train No. 20888). Its old departure time was 4:05 PM, but starting September 2, it will depart from Varanasi at 3:55 PM. The second affected service is the Varanasi-Deoghar Vande Bharat Express (Train No. 22500). Previously departing at 6:20 AM, its new departure time is 6:10 AM.
Focus on Train No. 20888: Varanasi to Ranchi
The Varanasi-Ranchi Vande Bharat is a vital link for travellers in the region, running six days a week (except Tuesdays). The service, which began commercial operations in March 2024, covers a distance of 536 kilometres in about 7 hours and 50 minutes. The train makes several important stops, including Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction, Sasaram, Gaya, Koderma, Hazaribagh Road, Parasnath, Bokaro Steel City, and Muri, before reaching Ranchi. While the departure from Varanasi is now at 3:55 PM, the timings at all these subsequent stations are not affected by the change.
Focus on Train No. 22500: Varanasi to Deoghar
The Varanasi-Deoghar Vande Bharat is another key service, especially for pilgrims visiting the Baidyanath Jyotirlinga temple in Deoghar. This train has also been rescheduled to depart 10 minutes earlier from Varanasi. From September 2, passengers will need to be ready for a 6:10 AM departure instead of the previous 6:20 AM time. As with the Ranchi service, Indian Railways has confirmed that the schedule for this train remains the same at all stations after it leaves Varanasi.

This change requires passengers to be proactive to ensure a smooth journey. First and foremost, if you are travelling on or after September 2, 2026, on either of these trains, double-check your departure time. Arriving at the station based on the old schedule could mean missing your train. It is advisable to arrive at the station at least 20-30 minutes before the new, earlier departure time to allow for security checks and finding your platform. Inform anyone who might be dropping you off or picking you up at a destination about your updated travel plan.
