Deep in the Eastern Ghats of Andhra Pradesh, the Parvathipuram Manyam district administration is launching an innovative 'bike tourism' project designed to showcase the region's stunning natural beauty while creating new livelihoods for local tribal communities.
The initiative focuses on creating curated motorcycle routes that guide travellers through dense forests, winding ghat roads, and scenic landscapes that have long been popular with riding enthusiasts but lacked formal infrastructure. The district, which has branded itself the "Home of Waterfalls," is already seeing a surge in visitors drawn to its natural splendour. This new project aims to structure that interest into a sustainable model. District Collector Prabhakar Reddy has directed officials to identify and develop tourism circuits, each approximately 30 kilometres long, that connect waterfalls, viewpoints, and trekking trails, ensuring a comprehensive and safe experience for visitors.
More Than Just a Ride
What sets this initiative apart is its deep commitment to community-based tourism. The goal is not just to attract tourists, but to ensure the economic benefits flow directly to the Adivasi youth and their families. This model builds on the success of a pilot project launched last October, which introduced a tribal bike taxi service to ferry tourists to remote waterfalls that were previously accessible only by trekking several kilometres. The positive response to that service demonstrated a clear demand for community-led adventure travel. By training and employing local youth as guides and service providers, the administration is fostering a sense of ownership and pride. This approach ensures that tourism development preserves, rather than disrupts, the region's rich cultural heritage and empowers residents to become the primary stakeholders in their local economy.
Crafting the Sustainable Experience
Sustainability is at the core of the planning process. Officials are tasked with creating a comprehensive action plan that goes beyond just marking trails. The plan includes establishing safe riding routes, designated rest shelters, secure overnight stay facilities, and camping options. This organised approach prevents the haphazard development that can harm sensitive ecosystems. The initiative also aims to formalise employment for locals, who will operate food stalls with local delicacies, manage accommodations, and act as official guides. By creating plastic-free zones and focusing on preserving the natural environment, the project aims for long-term viability. A dedicated website is also in development to allow tourists to book accommodations and meals in advance, streamlining the experience and ensuring that local providers can manage visitor flow effectively.
Exploring the Waterfalls and Trails
The proposed bike routes will offer riders an immersive journey through the district's most captivating sights. The circuits will be designed across all four Assembly constituencies—Parvathipuram, Kurupam, Salur, and Palakonda—ensuring a wide distribution of tourism benefits. Riders can expect to visit gems like the Moganali Waterfalls in Gumma Lakshmipuram mandal and Sikhaparuvu, which were part of the successful bike taxi pilot. The administration also plans to develop facilities at other stunning waterfalls including Dalaivalasa, Kurukutti, and Tonam. Beyond biking, the district is promoting complementary adventure activities like rock climbing and trekking, with 12 trekking routes already identified. Tribal youth are being professionally trained to guide these treks, ensuring visitor safety while providing authentic local knowledge.
