The Game Changer: Delhi-Dehradun Expressway
The gateway to the mountains of Uttarakhand is now a high-speed corridor. The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, expected to be fully operational in 2026, is set to slash travel time between the two cities from over six hours to just 2.5 hours. This 210-km, access-controlled
highway not only makes destinations like Mussoorie and Rishikesh significantly more accessible for a weekend trip, but it also serves as a critical link to the Char Dham highway network. While the expressway itself is a modern marvel of engineering, its true beauty lies in what it enables: less time on congested plains and more time breathing in the crisp mountain air. The project is in its final stages, with officials confirming it's nearly ready for inauguration.
The All-Weather Wonder: Manali to Lahaul via Atal Tunnel
The Atal Tunnel has fundamentally transformed travel in Himachal Pradesh. By bypassing the treacherous Rohtang Pass, this 9.02 km marvel provides year-round connectivity to the Lahaul Valley, which was previously cut off for nearly six months each winter. The journey from Manali to Keylong is now reduced by about four hours, making the stark, majestic landscapes of Lahaul accessible even for a short trip. The road from Manali to the tunnel's south portal is well-maintained, and once you emerge on the other side near Sissu, you're greeted by a completely different, more rugged world. While the tunnel has seen traffic exceed its capacity during peak seasons, its impact on tourism and local life is undeniable, opening up a once-seasonal paradise to the world, all year long.
The Strategic Marvel: Srinagar to Leh via Zoji La Tunnel
The legendary road trip from Srinagar to Leh is becoming safer and more reliable. The journey has always been at the mercy of the formidable Zoji La pass, which stays closed for up to seven months due to snow. The under-construction Zoji La Tunnel, a 13.15 km bi-directional tube, is set to change this dramatically. A major breakthrough in the tunnel's excavation was achieved in June 2026, marking a critical milestone. Once fully operational (target completion is now February 2028), the tunnel will cut the crossing time from over three hours to a mere 15-20 minutes, ensuring all-weather connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh. This not only has immense strategic importance but also promises to make the stunning drive through Sonamarg, Dras, and Kargil a dependable year-round adventure for travellers.
The Pilgrim's Progress: Char Dham All-Weather Road
The sacred pilgrimage to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath is undergoing a massive infrastructural overhaul. The Char Dham Pariyojana, an ambitious 825-km road widening and improvement project, is nearing completion. As of early 2026, major sections of the road are functional, significantly improving safety and reducing travel time on what were once perilous, narrow roads. While the Yamunotri route still presents challenges, the roads to Badrinath and Kedarnath (up to Gaurikund) are in much better condition. The project has introduced new bypasses, tunnels, and safety features, making the spiritual journey smoother and more accessible for the millions of pilgrims who undertake it each year.
The Eternal Classic: Hindustan-Tibet Road (NH-5)
While new expressways and tunnels grab headlines, the old Hindustan-Tibet Road (NH-5) from Shimla towards Spiti Valley remains one of the world's most epic drives. This historic route, carved into cliffsides, offers breathtaking views of the Sutlej river gorge and the changing Himalayan landscape. Recent years have seen significant improvements, making the journey from Shimla to Reckong Peo and beyond more manageable for regular vehicles. Though challenges like the landslide-prone Malling Nalla persist, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) works continuously to keep the route open. Unlike the Manali-Kaza route, the road via Shimla and Kinnaur generally stays open for more months of the year, making it a reliable choice for experiencing the raw, untamed beauty of the high Himalayas.
