Your Last-Minute Document Checklist
Rushing can lead to errors, so start by gathering all your necessary documents. Having these on hand will make the process smoother. You will need your PAN card, Aadhaar card, and details of all your bank accounts. The most crucial document is Form 16,
provided by your employer, which details your salary and the tax deducted at source (TDS). Also, download your Form 26AS, Annual Information Statement (AIS), and Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS) from the e-filing portal. These statements summarise all the tax deducted on your behalf and other financial transactions linked to your PAN, helping you report all income sources accurately. Finally, collect proofs for any deductions you plan to claim, such as home loan interest certificates, rent receipts for HRA, and receipts for investments under Section 80C.
Choose the Right ITR Form
Selecting the correct ITR form is one of the most critical steps; using the wrong one can lead to your return being marked as defective. For most salaried individuals, ITR-1 (also known as Sahaj) is the right choice. You are eligible to file ITR-1 if you are a resident individual with a total income of up to ₹50 lakh from salary, one house property, and other sources like bank interest. Your agricultural income must also be below ₹5,000. You cannot use ITR-1 if you have income from capital gains, own more than one house property, have foreign income or assets, or are a director in a company. In those cases, you would typically need to file ITR-2.
A Quick Guide to the Filing Process
With your documents ready, log in to the official income tax e-filing portal (incometax.gov.in) using your PAN. Once logged in, navigate to the 'e-File' section, select 'Income Tax Return', and then 'File Income Tax Return'. Choose the Assessment Year 2026-27 and select the filing mode as 'Online'. The portal will offer to pre-fill your data using information from your employer and other sources linked to your PAN. This is a huge time-saver, but it is essential to verify this pre-filled information against your own documents, especially your Form 16, Form 26AS, and AIS. Carefully review your personal information, confirm your income details, and enter all applicable deductions. Once you have confirmed all the schedules, the system will show a summary of your tax computation. If there is tax due, you must pay it before submitting the return.
Common Last-Minute Mistakes to Avoid
In the final rush, certain errors are common. A major one is failing to report all income, such as interest from savings accounts or fixed deposits. Relying solely on Form 16 is a mistake; all income sources must be declared. Another frequent error is incorrect personal details, especially bank account numbers and IFSC codes, which can delay refunds. Also, ensure you cross-check the information in your AIS and Form 26AS. Any mismatch between the income you declare and the information the tax department has can trigger a notice. Finally, don't claim deductions for which you don't have proof or eligibility, as this can lead to scrutiny later.
The Final, Crucial Step: E-Verification
Submitting your ITR is not the final step. Your filing process is only complete after you verify your return. An unverified return is considered invalid, as if it were never filed at all. The deadline to verify your return is 30 days from the date of filing. The quickest and easiest method is e-verification. You can instantly verify your return using an Aadhaar OTP, through your pre-validated bank account, or via your net banking portal. Once you e-verify, you will receive a confirmation via SMS and email, and the tax department will begin processing your return. Only after successful verification will any refund you are due be processed.
