Introducing the Vande Bharat Express
The Indian Railways has approved the introduction of a new Vande Bharat Express, which will provide a much-anticipated direct and faster link between Surat and Udaipur. This is Surat's first Vande Bharat train and Gujarat's sixth, marking a significant
milestone in the region's transport infrastructure. The service, operated by Western Railway, is designed to offer a premium, comfortable, and speedy travel option for passengers, effectively replacing the shorter Udaipur City-Asarva Vande Bharat service to create a longer, more comprehensive route.
Timetable and Schedule
The train will run six days a week, with no service on Tuesdays. For travellers starting from Surat, train number 26903 will depart at 6:10 AM and arrive in Udaipur City at 1:40 PM. On its return journey, train number 26904 will leave Udaipur City at 3:35 PM and reach Surat at 11:00 PM the same evening. This convenient schedule allows for a full day of activities in Udaipur before the return trip or an early morning start from Surat for business or leisure.
The Speed Advantage: A 7.5-Hour Journey
The key highlight of this new service is its speed. The Vande Bharat Express will cover the approximately 690-kilometre distance in about 7 hours and 30 minutes. This is a significant reduction compared to other trains on the route, which can take upwards of 11 to 12 hours to complete the same journey. The train, composed of an 8-car rake, is a semi-high-speed service capable of reaching a maximum speed of 160 kmph, which allows it to maintain a higher average speed and reduce overall travel duration.
Route and Key Halts
To ensure wide connectivity across Gujarat and southern Rajasthan, the train has nine designated commercial stops between the two main cities. The halts are at Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Maninagar, Asarva, Himmatnagar, Shamlaji Road, Dungarpur, and Zawar. These stops connect several important commercial towns and developing areas, making the service accessible to a larger population and facilitating easier travel for those living outside the main terminuses.
A Boost for Tourism and Commerce
The launch of this train is expected to have a significant positive impact on both tourism and commerce. Surat, known globally as a diamond and textile powerhouse, will now have a direct, high-speed connection to Udaipur, a major international tourist destination famous for its lakes, palaces, and rich history. This link will not only make travel easier for tourists but also for business travellers, potentially fostering stronger economic ties between south Gujarat and the Mewar region of Rajasthan. The improved connectivity is set to make weekend trips and business commutes far more feasible.
Booking and Onboard Experience
The Vande Bharat Express is known for its modern amenities, including comfortable seating, onboard catering, and clean, well-maintained interiors. The train will feature both AC Chair Car and Executive Class configurations. Passengers can book tickets through the official Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website and mobile app once bookings are officially opened. Given the popularity of Vande Bharat services, it is advisable to book tickets in advance, especially during festive seasons and on weekends.
