the weather gets progressively clearer and more pleasant as the month goes on. Temperatures in Kathmandu and Pokhara are comfortable, averaging in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius. This is the beginning of the peak trekking season, but it’s still early enough to avoid the largest crowds that arrive in October. Cultural sites in the Kathmandu Valley are perfect for exploration, and towns like Pokhara offer serene lake views and gateways to shorter treks.
Vietnam: For Culture, Food, and Diverse Landscapes
Vietnam offers a dynamic mix of ancient history, incredible food, and varied scenery. However, the weather in September is complex and varies by region. Northern Vietnam, including Hanoi and Ha Long Bay, enters a beautiful autumn phase with cooler, more comfortable temperatures perfect for city exploration and cruising. In fact, September is considered one of the best months to visit Hanoi. It's also the golden harvest season in mountainous areas like Sapa and Mu Cang Chai, offering breathtaking views of terraced rice fields. Conversely, Central Vietnam (Da Nang, Hoi An) and Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City) are in their rainy season. While this means frequent, often short-lived showers and high humidity, it also results in fewer crowds and lower travel costs. If you don’t mind packing a raincoat, the south and central regions still offer plenty to do indoors and during dry spells.
Sri Lanka: For a Blend of Beaches, Culture, and Wildlife
Sri Lanka in September is a tale of two coasts. The southwest monsoon is ending, meaning the south and west coasts (home to Colombo and popular beach towns) can still be wet. However, the east and north coasts, including Trincomalee and Arugam Bay, are largely dry and sunny, offering perfect conditions for beach lovers and surfers. September is also an excellent time to explore the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa), where you can expect pleasant weather and fewer tourists than in the peak summer months. Visas and Flights: The Practicalities
This is where the destinations really differ for Indian passport holders. Nepal is the undisputed winner for ease of entry; Indian citizens do not require a visa and can enter with a valid passport or even other government-issued ID. Flights are short and plentiful from major Indian cities. Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), which is a simple online process that is usually approved quickly. Multiple airlines offer direct and connecting flights, making it very accessible. Vietnam requires Indian citizens to obtain an e-visa in advance of their travel, which is also an online process but requires a few days for processing and submission of documents like photos and passport scans. Flight costs to Vietnam can be slightly higher and travel times longer compared to Nepal and Sri Lanka.
The Budget Question: What Will It Cost?
All three countries are known for being budget-friendly for Indian travellers. Nepal generally stands out as the most affordable, especially regarding food, local transport, and accommodation. Sri Lanka is also highly economical. While entry fees for major tourist sites like Sigiriya can be relatively high, daily expenses for food and lodging remain low. Vietnam offers great value for money, particularly with its delicious and cheap street food. In general, your budget will stretch far in any of these locations, but Nepal often has a slight edge for the most cost-conscious traveller. Flights to Sri Lanka and Nepal from India are often cheaper than those to Vietnam.
