An All-Weather Lifeline
The Vande Bharat service running between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar is the crown jewel of the ambitious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. For decades, the only direct link, the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, has been notoriously unreliable,
prone to closures from landslides, heavy snowfall, and traffic congestion. This new rail service provides a dependable, all-weather alternative, drastically changing how people and goods move. The journey, which could often take a gruelling seven hours or more by road, is now completed in under five hours. Following a successful inauguration on April 30, 2026, regular services began, quickly becoming a preferred mode of transport for locals and tourists alike.
An Engineering Marvel Through the Himalayas
Bringing high-speed rail to Kashmir required overcoming immense geographical and geological hurdles. The route is a showcase of modern Indian engineering, traversing the formidable Pir Panjal range. It features incredible structures like the Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge, and the Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed rail bridge. The Vande Bharat trains themselves are specially adapted for the valley's climate, with advanced heating systems to operate in sub-zero temperatures and prevent freezing, ensuring year-round reliability. Recently, the train achieved speeds of nearly 100 kmph on the Chenab Bridge, a testament to the quality of the infrastructure and a move that further reduces travel time.
A Game-Changer for Tourism
The economic impact, particularly on tourism, has been immediate and profound. The comfort, speed, and safety of the Vande Bharat Express have made Kashmir a more accessible destination, encouraging a new wave of visitors. Tourists who were once hesitant due to the arduous road journey now have a world-class travel option. Hoteliers and tour operators have reported a significant rise in bookings since the train's launch, with occupancy rates remaining exceptionally high. The journey itself, offering breathtaking views of mountains and valleys, has become part of the Kashmir experience, transforming a tedious commute into a scenic adventure.
Boosting the Local Economy
Beyond tourism, the Vande Bharat service is a massive boon for local trade and agriculture. Farmers and artisans now have a faster, more reliable way to transport their produce—including Kashmir's famous apples, saffron, and walnuts—to markets across the country, ensuring better prices and less spoilage. This improved logistical chain is vital for integrating the region's economy with the rest of India. The high demand for the service has already led to plans for expansion. With two Vande Bharat trains running at full capacity, a third service has been approved to handle the growing passenger traffic, including a new stop at Udhampur to enhance local connectivity.
More Than Just a Train
The Srinagar Vande Bharat service represents more than just physical infrastructure; it's a powerful symbol of national integration and progress. For residents, it provides easier access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities in other parts of the country. It brings families closer, reducing the emotional and physical toll of travel. The project has already generated enormous employment and, by connecting remote villages, has become a lifeline for many communities. It's a tangible sign of development that is reshaping daily life and fostering a deeper sense of connection between Kashmir and the rest of India.
