The Vande Bharat service running between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar is the crown jewel of the ambitious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. For decades, the only direct link, the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, has been notoriously unreliable,
prone to closures from landslides, heavy snowfall, and traffic congestion. This new rail service provides a dependable, all-weather alternative, drastically changing how people and goods move. The journey, which could often take a gruelling seven hours or more by road, is now completed in under five hours. Following a successful inauguration on April 30, 2026, regular services began, quickly becoming a preferred mode of transport for locals and tourists alike.
An Engineering Marvel Through the Himalayas
Bringing high-speed rail to Kashmir required overcoming immense geographical and geological hurdles. The route is a showcase of modern Indian engineering, traversing the formidable Pir Panjal range. It features incredible structures like the Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge, and the Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed rail bridge. The Vande Bharat trains themselves are specially adapted for the valley's climate, with advanced heating systems to operate in sub-zero temperatures and prevent freezing, ensuring year-round reliability.
