The New Definition of Value
For many young adults, the concept of ownership is being redefined. Where previous generations might have coveted a designer handbag or a new car, a significant portion of Gen Z places higher value on digital assets and experiences. This isn't just a fleeting
trend; it’s a foundational shift in consumer behaviour. Having grown up in a world where social lives and personal identity are deeply intertwined with the internet, spending money on digital goods feels as natural as buying a coffee. In India, where Gen Z constitutes a massive demographic of over 370 million, this digital-first mindset is driving a significant portion of e-commerce growth. They are not just passive consumers but are actively shaping the digital marketplace.
Gaming: More Than Just a Pastime
Gaming is no longer a niche hobby; for Gen Z, it's a primary social space and a major area of expenditure. Reports indicate that a vast majority of Gen Z, around 90%, identify as gamers. Their spending isn't just on new game titles, which they are 33% more likely to buy from digital stores. A substantial portion of their budget goes towards in-game purchases. These microtransactions, for items like cosmetic skins, character outfits, or special abilities, are seen as investments in personal expression and social status within the gaming community. Research shows that over half of Gen Z gamers make such purchases, viewing these digital items as a form of self-expression. This willingness to spend on virtual goods highlights how digital identity is becoming as important as physical appearance.
A Universe of Subscriptions
The subscription economy is tailor-made for Gen Z's consumption habits. This generation has grown up with on-demand access to entertainment and is willing to pay for it. A large majority, over 80%, are willing to pay for video streaming services. Monthly spending on various media services, including streaming, audio, and social media subscriptions, is higher for Gen Z than for any other generation. In India, a significant portion of their digital time is spent on platforms like OTT services, music streaming, and podcasts. This comfort with recurring payments for a portfolio of digital services—from Netflix and Disney+ to Spotify and YouTube Premium—demonstrates a preference for access over ownership and a desire for ad-free, curated content.
Fueling the Creator Economy
Perhaps one of the most significant shifts in spending is the rise of the creator economy. Gen Z consumers are increasingly directing their money towards supporting individual content creators they follow on platforms like YouTube, Twitch, and Instagram. This can take the form of channel memberships, direct donations, or purchasing merchandise. For this generation, authenticity is key, and they often trust recommendations from creators more than traditional advertising. Reports show that a high percentage of Gen Z consumers have purchased products based on influencer recommendations. This direct financial relationship fosters a sense of community and allows them to support the content they value, turning passive consumption into active participation.
Why It Matters for Brands
This shift in spending from physical goods to digital content has profound implications for businesses. The path to purchase for Gen Z often starts and ends on social media and digital platforms. They discover products through AI-driven feeds, influencer content, and online communities rather than active searches. In India, Gen Z accounts for a staggering 40-45% of online shoppers, highlighting their economic power. Brands that want to connect with this demographic must think beyond traditional product sales and focus on creating engaging digital experiences, fostering community, and collaborating with trusted voices within the creator economy. The message is clear: to win over Gen Z, you have to meet them where they live—online.
