The fear that AI will lead to mass layoffs has dominated headlines, and there is a kernel of truth to the concern. The era of large-scale, volume-based hiring for repetitive tasks is coming to an end. Roles centered around basic coding, manual software
testing, and routine customer support are increasingly being automated by sophisticated AI tools. One recent report from the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) found that 55% of surveyed firms noted a decline in entry-level hiring due to AI. This structural shift means the traditional model of hiring thousands of fresh graduates for training on the job is evolving. Companies are now prioritising candidates who already possess specific, job-ready skills rather than hiring in bulk. However, this isn't a simple story of job destruction.
More Jobs Created Than Lost
Contrary to the widespread anxiety, recent data suggests that AI is currently a net job creator in India. A report from Japanese brokerage Nomura found that AI has generated more jobs than it has displaced, tracking a net gain of over 51,000 positions. For every job lost to automation, approximately 2.6 new roles were created. The narrative is not one of replacement, but of transformation. The World Economic Forum has echoed this sentiment, projecting that while AI could displace 85 million jobs globally, it will also create 97 million new ones. India's vast talent pool and cost-effective environment have positioned it as a global hub for AI implementation, driving this growth. The IT sector is not shrinking; it is fundamentally reshaping.
The Rise of the AI-First Professional
The jobs being created are different in nature and require a new breed of skills. Demand is surging for roles that didn't exist a few years ago. These include AI and Machine Learning Engineers, who build and train complex AI models, and Prompt Engineers, who specialise in crafting instructions to guide AI systems toward accurate and creative outputs. Other emerging high-demand positions include AI Ethicists, AI Product Managers, MLOps (Machine Learning Operations) specialists, and AI Cybersecurity Analysts. A significant shift is also underway from merely building AI to applying it. Companies are actively hiring 'Forward-Deployed Engineers' and 'Agentic AI Engineers' who can bridge the gap between technology and business, using AI to solve real-world problems. This demonstrates a move towards a more mature phase of AI adoption, where measurable business outcomes are the primary goal.
The Urgent Call for Upskilling
The clear message for India's next generation of IT professionals is that continuous learning is no longer optional. The skills that defined the last decade are being superseded by new AI-centric capabilities. According to a joint report from NASSCOM and Indeed, nearly all organisations expect their 2026 workforce strategy to revolve around AI roles. Technical skills like Python, SQL, and proficiency in cloud platforms like AWS and Azure remain foundational. However, employers are increasingly prioritising demonstrable AI skills, with 40% preferring certifications over traditional degrees. Beyond technical prowess, uniquely human skills are becoming more valuable. Creativity, complex problem-solving, social intelligence, and ethical decision-making are abilities that AI cannot easily replicate, making them critical for future career growth.
National Mission for an AI-Ready India
Recognising this pivotal moment, the Indian government and industry bodies have launched several initiatives to prepare the workforce. The national 'IndiaAI Mission' aims to democratise AI education and build a robust talent pipeline. Key programs include setting up Data and AI Labs in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities to provide hands-on experience and offering fellowships for advanced AI studies. Initiatives like 'FutureSkills PRIME' and the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) 4.0 are focused on upskilling millions of professionals in emerging technologies. NASSCOM reports that over two million professionals have already been upskilled in AI, with nearly 300,000 trained in advanced capabilities. This concerted effort aims to bridge the talent gap and solidify India's position as a global leader in the AI revolution.
