The much-anticipated Vande Bharat sleeper trains are grabbing headlines again, but this time for a small detail that makes a big difference. A new sliding door at the coach entrance promises to fix one of the oldest problems of overnight train travel.
A Simple Solution to a Common Problem
Anyone who has travelled in an AC 3-tier coach knows the struggle of getting the berths near the main doors. These spots are often subject to constant disturbances. The frequent opening and closing of doors, the movement of passengers and vendors, light streaming in from the vestibule, and noise from the toilet area can make for a restless night. A recent video from a travel content creator highlighted how the new Vande Bharat sleeper train is designed to tackle this specific issue. The coaches feature a sliding door that separates the main aisle from the entryway. This creates a buffer zone, effectively shielding the nearest passenger berths from the commotion at the coach entrance.
How Does the New Design Work?
The design innovation is straightforward but effective. In conventional LHB coaches, like those used in Rajdhani Express trains, the transverse berths (side-lower and side-upper) are immediately adjacent to the main entry and exit doors. The new Vande Bharat sleeper layout pushes the sleeping area further into the coach. It introduces a separate space and a sliding door between the entrance and the first set of berths. This not only blocks noise and light but also creates a more private and enclosed atmosphere for the entire coach. Passengers have reacted positively to the design, with many suggesting it should be a standard feature on all overnight trains.
More Than Just a Door
This sliding door is part of a broader focus on passenger-centric design in the Vande Bharat sleeper project. The trains are engineered to provide a significantly more comfortable journey compared to their predecessors. They feature improved suspension and advanced coupling technology to ensure a smoother, jerk-free ride. The coaches have sealed gangways to reduce noise and maintain a dust-free environment. Other upgrades include ergonomically designed berths with better cushioning, improved ladders for accessing upper berths, and sensor-based lighting in common areas. The interiors use a soothing colour palette of cream, yellow, and wood to create a pleasant ambience.
A New Benchmark for Sleeper Travel
The Vande Bharat sleeper is a self_propelled trainset, which allows for faster acceleration and deceleration, helping to reduce travel times on long_distance routes. With an operational speed of up to 160 kmph, these trains are set to become a strong competitor to Rajdhani Express services. The focus on safety is also paramount, with features like the indigenous KAVACH anti_collision system, CCTV cameras throughout the coaches, and advanced fire detection and suppression systems. For added convenience, the trains offer modern bio_vacuum toilets, touch_free fittings, and even hot showers in the AC First Class coaches.
When Can You Experience It?
The era of Vande Bharat sleepers has already begun. The first service connecting Howrah and Guwahati started commercial operations in January 2026. This was followed by the inauguration of the Kashi_Delhi Vande Bharat Sleeper in October 2026. More recently, a new service connecting Bengaluru and Mumbai was flagged off on November 1, 2026, and has seen heavy demand, with tickets booked out for weeks in advance. The trains are being manufactured by several entities, including BEML in Bengaluru and a joint venture at the Marathwada Rail Coach Facility in Latur, ensuring a steady rollout of new rakes to expand the network across the country.
