Know Your Daily Transaction Limit
Before you start your shopping spree, it's crucial to know your daily UPI transaction limit. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) sets a standard limit, which is typically ₹1 lakh per day. However, your bank might have its own, often lower,
limit. Some banks also restrict the number of transactions you can make in a 24-hour period, commonly up to 20. Exceeding either of these caps is a common reason for payment failure, especially during heavy shopping days. You can usually check these limits within your UPI app's settings under 'Bank Account' or 'Payment Methods'. Knowing your ceiling helps you plan big-ticket purchases and avoid declines.
Confirm Your Account Has Sufficient Balance
It sounds basic, but one of the most frequent reasons for a UPI payment failure is an insufficient account balance. During the festive season, with multiple small and large purchases, it's easy to lose track. Before heading out, do a quick balance check through your banking or UPI app. This simple step can save you from the awkwardness of a declined payment at the checkout counter. Keeping your account topped up or being aware of the available funds ensures your transactions go through smoothly.
Verify the Default Bank Account
Many users link multiple bank accounts to a single UPI app for convenience. While this is a great feature, it can also lead to confusion. Before making a payment, always double-check which account is set as your default for sending money. A payment might fail if it's drawn from an account with a low balance, even if your primary salary account is well-funded. Making sure the correct account is selected is a quick check that prevents unnecessary transaction failures and helps you manage your festive budget better.
Secure and Update Your UPI PIN
Your UPI PIN is the key to your account, and keeping it secure is non-negotiable. Never share your PIN with anyone, including merchants or individuals claiming to be from your bank. Remember that you only need to enter your PIN to send money, not to receive it. Scammers often use the festive rush to create fake offers that trick people into sharing sensitive details. It's also good practice to ensure your PIN is strong and not easily guessable. If you have any security concerns, change your PIN before you start shopping.
Keep Your UPI App Updated
Developers regularly release updates for UPI apps to introduce new features, improve performance, and, most importantly, patch security vulnerabilities. Using an outdated app might not only cause compatibility issues or glitches but could also expose you to security risks. Before the festive shopping begins, visit your phone's app store and ensure your preferred UPI apps—be it Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or your bank's native app—are updated to the latest version for a stable and secure payment experience.
Review Your Recent Transaction History
Take a few minutes to scroll through your recent UPI transaction history. This helps you get a clear picture of your recent spending habits and allows you to spot any unauthorized or suspicious activity early on. If you notice any transaction you don't recognize, you can report it to your bank immediately. This proactive check ensures your account is secure before you start making numerous festive purchases.
Know What to Do If a Payment Fails
Even with all precautions, technology can sometimes fail, especially during high-traffic periods like Diwali. If a transaction fails but the amount is debited from your account, do not panic and do not pay again immediately, as this could lead to a double payment. In most cases, the money is automatically refunded within a few hours or up to a few working days. If the refund doesn't appear, you can raise a dispute directly within the UPI app using the transaction ID. If that doesn't resolve the issue, contact your bank's customer support.
