The Legendary Konkan Railway
The journey between Mumbai and Goa is one of India's most celebrated train routes. The Mandovi Express, which connects Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) with Madgaon in Goa, is a star performer on this line. During the monsoon months,
from roughly June to September, the route is a vibrant canvas of electric green paddy fields, mist-covered hills of the Sahyadris, and countless streams and waterfalls that appear as if from nowhere. It’s a journey that’s as much about the experience as the destination, offering a cinematic view of the Western Ghats in their full rainy-season glory.
Dudhsagar: The Main Attraction
While the entire route is scenic, the undisputed highlight for many is the view of Dudhsagar Falls. Located on the Mandovi River on the border of Goa and Karnataka, this four-tiered waterfall becomes a roaring spectacle during the monsoon. The railway line passes directly in front of the falls, offering passengers a breathtaking, albeit brief, view. During the monsoon, access to the base of the falls via jeep safari is typically suspended for safety reasons, making the train the only legal and safe way to witness this magnificent sight. Trains often slow down as they approach the viaduct near the falls, giving you a precious window to capture the view of the 'Sea of Milk' cascading down the mountainside.
Planning Your Journey: Trains and Timings
The Mandovi Express runs daily. Train number 10103 departs from Mumbai (CSMT) in the morning at 07:10 AM, reaching Madgaon (MAO) at night. The return journey is train number 10104, which leaves Madgaon at 08:30 AM. Booking in advance is highly recommended, especially during peak season. While the Mandovi Express is a great choice, other trains like the Tejas Express and Jan Shatabdi also ply this route, though timings and halts will vary. The journey duration on the Mandovi Express is extended during the monsoon schedule for safety, giving you a roughly 13-15 hour ride through this beautiful terrain.
Tips for the Best Viewing Experience
To make the most of your trip, a little planning goes a long way. When travelling from Mumbai towards Goa (Train 10103), the most scenic stretches with waterfalls, including Dudhsagar, are best viewed from the left side of the train. Conversely, when travelling from Goa to Mumbai (Train 10104), a seat on the right side is preferable. For the best, unobstructed views, a window seat is a must. While AC coaches offer comfort, many travellers prefer the non-AC sleeper class, where open windows allow for an unfiltered sensory experience of the cool, moist air and the sounds of the rain-soaked landscape. Keep your camera ready, especially after the train passes Kulem station on its way towards Karnataka, which is where Dudhsagar is located.
Beyond the Waterfalls
Dudhsagar may be the showstopper, but it’s far from the only attraction. The Konkan Railway is an engineering marvel, featuring 92 tunnels and over 2,000 bridges. The journey on the Mandovi Express takes you across numerous rivers, including the impressive Zuari and Mandovi river bridges in Goa. The train winds through dense forests, past quaint villages, and offers glimpses of the Arabian Sea. The experience is also a culinary one; the Mandovi Express is nicknamed the 'Food Queen of Konkan Railways' for its excellent onboard pantry service, offering a variety of snacks and meals that enhance the travel experience. So even when you’re not gazing at waterfalls, the journey remains captivating.
