A Direct Link During Peak Season
Air India has officially announced a new seasonal non-stop service connecting India's financial capital, Mumbai, with Toronto, Canada's largest city. This is significant news, as it will be the only direct flight operating between the two bustling hubs
during its run. The service is scheduled to operate three times a week, starting from October 25, 2026, and continuing through March 26, 2027, perfectly timed for the festive, winter, and holiday travel season. The route will be serviced by an upgraded Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, which includes First, Business, and Economy class cabins, and features amenities like onboard Wi-Fi. This development is a massive convenience for the thousands of students, professionals, and families who travel between western India and Canada, eliminating the need for layovers in Europe or the Middle East.
The Critical Baggage Allowance
For anyone embarking on a long-haul journey, especially for extended stays or family visits, baggage is a primary concern. While Air India has not specified a unique allowance for this new route, its standard policy for India-to-Canada flights offers a reliable guide. Typically, for Economy Class passengers, the airline permits two checked-in bags, each weighing up to 23 kg. Business and First Class travellers enjoy a more generous allowance. This two-piece concept is a significant advantage over many other carriers that may only offer one. However, it's crucial to remember that the maximum weight for any single piece of luggage cannot exceed 32 kg across the entire Air India network. As fare types can sometimes influence baggage limits, the most prudent step for any traveller is to confirm their specific baggage allowance at the time of booking or by checking their ticket details.
Seamless Connections from Indian Cities
One of the most compelling features of this new route is the promise of streamlined travel from across India. Air India has emphasised that its Mumbai and Delhi hubs will facilitate seamless onward connections. This means a passenger flying from cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, or Kochi can book their entire journey on a single ticket. The key benefit here is through-check-in. You can check your baggage at your departure city and, in most cases, it will be automatically transferred to the Toronto-bound flight in Mumbai. This avoids the hassle of collecting bags and re-checking them mid-journey, making the entire travel experience smoother and less stressful, particularly for those travelling with family or a lot of luggage.
Arriving in Toronto and Flying Onward
The journey doesn't always end in Toronto. For many, it's a gateway to other destinations in Canada or the United States. Upon landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), all passengers must first clear Canadian immigration and customs. You will need to collect your checked baggage for this inspection. Once you have cleared customs, you will find dedicated counters for connecting flights. Here, you can re-check your bags for your next flight, whether it's to another Canadian city like Vancouver or Calgary, or to a destination in the US. This process is standard for all international arrivals connecting to domestic or trans-border flights in Canada. Airports are well-signed, and staff are available to guide you through the process, but it's wise to allow for sufficient connection time.
Tips for a Smoother Journey
To make the most of this new route, a little planning goes a long way. Given the seasonal nature and high demand during festive periods, booking your tickets well in advance is highly recommended. When booking from a connecting city in India, ensure your entire itinerary is on a single PNR (Passenger Name Record) or ticket to benefit from through-checked baggage. Familiarise yourself with the cabin baggage rules, which typically allow for one main bag of around 7 kg and a smaller personal item. Finally, take advantage of web check-in to save time at the airport and choose your seats in advance, ensuring your long-haul journey is as comfortable as possible.
