What is the Official Timeline?
While the headline suggests a new specific timeline has been set, the current official guidance from the Income Tax Department remains consistent. Most refunds for correctly filed and verified returns are processed and credited within a window of four
to five weeks. However, this is a general benchmark, not a statutory guarantee. For straightforward returns, such as those from salaried individuals with no complex deductions, the processing can be much faster, sometimes happening within days. Conversely, more complex returns involving capital gains or multiple income sources may take longer.
The Crucial First Step: Verification
The refund clock does not start when you file your Income Tax Return (ITR). It begins only after you have successfully e-verified it. Taxpayers have 30 days from the date of filing to complete this verification. If you miss this window, your return can be considered invalid, and the refund process will not start at all. The department has made e-verification simple, with options including using an Aadhaar OTP, net banking, or a bank account. Completing this step immediately after filing is the single most important thing you can do to speed up your refund.
Why Your Refund Might Be Delayed
Several common issues can delay your refund. One of the most frequent causes is a mismatch in information between your ITR and the data held by the department in documents like Form 26AS and the Annual Information Statement (AIS). Another major reason for delay is related to your bank account. The refund will only be credited to a pre-validated bank account that is linked to your PAN. Incorrect bank account numbers, IFSC codes, a closed or dormant account, or a name mismatch between your PAN and bank records can all cause the refund to fail.
Outstanding Demands Can Stop Your Payout
Another reason you may not receive your expected refund is an outstanding tax demand from a previous assessment year. The Income Tax Department has the authority to adjust your current refund against any pending dues. If such an adjustment is made, you will receive an intimation notice explaining the details. The tax portal will show that the refund was adjusted, either partially or in full, against the outstanding amount. It's crucial to check for any such notices and respond if you believe the demand is incorrect.
How to Check Your Refund Status
Instead of waiting anxiously, you can proactively track the status of your refund. The official e-filing portal provides a step-by-step view of your ITR's lifecycle. To check, log in to the portal and navigate to 'e-File', then 'Income Tax Returns', and finally 'View Filed Returns'. Here you can select the relevant assessment year to see the status. The portal will clearly indicate if your return is under processing, has been processed, if a refund has been issued, or if it has failed for any reason.
