Understand the Tool's True Nature
Before letting your teen rely on ChatGPT for homework, it is crucial for both of you to understand what it is: a Large Language Model (LLM). It's designed to predict the next most likely word in a sentence, making it excellent at generating human-like
text. However, it is not a search engine or an encyclopedia. It does not 'know' facts; it generates text based on patterns in the vast amount of data it was trained on. This means it can be confidently incorrect, producing plausible-sounding misinformation, sometimes called 'hallucinations'. Teach your teen to treat its output as a starting point for research, not the final answer.
Establish Clear Rules on Academic Integrity
The biggest concern for parents and educators is the potential for misuse, from accidental plagiarism to deliberate cheating. It's essential to have a direct conversation about academic honesty. Define what constitutes acceptable use versus cheating. For instance, using ChatGPT to brainstorm ideas, create a study outline, or explain a complex concept in simpler terms is a legitimate use. Copying and pasting its output directly into an assignment is plagiarism. Discuss your child's school policies on AI, as many institutions are now creating specific guidelines. The goal is to frame the tool as a 'tutor' to help them learn, not a 'doer' to complete their work for them.
Teach Critical Thinking and Fact-Checking
Because AI can invent facts, the most important skill to pair with its use is critical evaluation. Instill the habit of verification in your teen. Teach them to cross-reference any specific claims, dates, or statistics with at least two other reliable sources, such as academic websites, trusted news outlets, or textbooks. Show them how to ask follow-up questions like, “What is the source of that information?” to prompt the AI to reveal its data origins, which can then be checked. This turns a passive act of receiving information into an active process of critical thinking, a skill that is invaluable in the digital age.
Review Privacy Settings and Promote Digital Safety
Conversations with ChatGPT are not always private. The data can be used to train future AI models. It is wise to sit with your teen and review the privacy settings. OpenAI has introduced features for teen accounts and parental controls that allow a guardian to link their account to their teen's. These controls can help manage settings for a more age-appropriate experience. Teach your teen not to share sensitive personal information—like their full name, address, school, or financial details—in their chats. Remind them that they are interacting with an AI, and every 90 minutes, a reminder to take a break is a good practice.
Focus on Learning, Not Just Finishing
In India's competitive academic environment, the pressure to perform can be immense, making shortcuts tempting. Emphasise that the objective of education is learning and developing skills, not just submitting assignments. Over-reliance on AI can hinder the development of crucial abilities like writing, problem-solving, and critical analysis. Encourage its use for tasks that enhance learning, such as practicing a new language, getting feedback on their own writing, or breaking down a large project into manageable steps. With India set to make AI a mandatory part of the curriculum from lower classes, learning to use these tools ethically is becoming a core educational skill itself.
