Dubai is adding another superlative to its list: a 24-carat gold walkway. Set to open in Deira's new Gold District, the path promises a unique tourist experience. But this project is more than just a glittering attraction; it's a strategic move to cement
Dubai's future as the world's 'City of Gold'.
A Path Paved with Gold?
Officials have announced that the world's first and longest 24-carat gold walkway is set to open in Deira before the end of 2026, with some reports suggesting it could be ready within two months. This shimmering path is the showpiece of the Dubai Gold District, a sprawling new hub for the precious metals trade that officially launched in January 2026. While the exact construction details, length, and quantity of gold remain under wraps, the project was first teased as a 'Gold Street' designed to be a major attraction. Rashid Al Harmoodi, a senior director at the Dubai Gold District, stated the project aims to offer visitors an exceptional experience unlike any other, reinforcing Dubai's global standing in both tourism and gold trading.
More Than a Walkway: A New Gold Hub
The golden path is the most eye-catching feature of the much larger Dubai Gold District. Developed by Ithra Dubai, this purpose-built zone is a modern extension of the city's famous, historic Gold Souk. Rather than replacing the old market, the new district expands upon it, bringing the entire industry ecosystem into one place. It houses over 1,000 retailers, encompassing not just jewellery but also bullion traders, wholesale offices, and investment services, alongside lifestyle brands and hotels. The goal is to create a seamless environment for both shoppers and businesses, enhancing the entire experience from browsing to buying and trading. The district has already seen significant growth, with a 20 percent increase in wholesale gold trading offices since the start of the year.
Revitalising a Historic Trading Centre
This ambitious project is part of the Deira Enrichment Project, a master plan to revitalise one of Dubai's oldest and most historically significant commercial areas. For decades, the Deira Gold Souk has been a cornerstone of Dubai's economy and a major draw for tourists, with its labyrinthine alleys and hundreds of shops. However, in a city known for its futuristic malls and luxury retail spaces, the traditional souk needed an upgrade. The new extension provides a more modern urban experience with air-conditioned walkways, significantly improved parking, and better connectivity, all while aiming to retain the cultural charm of the original market. This blend of old and new is designed to attract a new generation of shoppers and high-spending tourists who might otherwise frequent the city's newer attractions.
The Business of Being the 'City of Gold'
Ultimately, the gold walkway is a brilliant piece of marketing rooted in a serious economic strategy. Dubai has long leveraged its reputation as a major hub for physical gold trading, and this project is a bold, physical manifestation of that identity. By creating a one-of-a-kind, headline-grabbing attraction, the city aims to drive footfall directly to its commercial heartland for gold. The initiative is intended to give visitors a distinctive experience, which in turn boosts Dubai's reputation as a leading destination for both gold and tourism. It’s a calculated investment in the city's brand, signalling to the world that even as it modernises, its connection to the gold trade remains stronger and more ambitious than ever. The project complements other efforts within the district, including plans for a major gold and jewellery exhibition, to ensure the area remains a global epicentre for the industry.
