What is the New Program?
IIT Bombay has launched an e-Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence (CS & AI). This one-year programme is offered through the institute's Educational Outreach initiative and is designed for both working professionals and recent
graduates. Delivered in partnership with the ed-tech platform Great Learning, it combines online learning with an in-person campus immersion at IIT Bombay, giving students a taste of the iconic campus life. The structure is flexible, allowing learners to complete the required six courses in up to three years. The initiative aims to provide a deep, foundational understanding of both computer science and AI, moving beyond just the superficial use of AI tools.
Who Can Apply?
The programme targets a broad audience. It is primarily aimed at software developers, engineers, IT professionals, and data scientists who want to formalise and upgrade their skills. However, it is also open to fresh graduates who have a basic knowledge of computer science. Another similar e-PG diploma from IIT Bombay in AI and Data Science specifies that applicants must have either a four-year undergraduate degree or a three-year undergraduate degree with at least one year of work experience. The goal is to cater to those who have learned computer science either through their formal education or on the job, providing a pathway for continuous learning. Upon successful completion, participants are awarded IIT Bombay e-alumni status.
What Will You Learn?
The curriculum is designed to be robust, blending core computer science principles with the latest advancements in artificial intelligence. The AI and machine learning portion of the course covers cutting-edge topics like Generative AI, large language models (LLMs), deep learning, computer vision, and natural language processing (NLP). The computer science basket includes subjects such as algorithms, blockchain, web security, and big data systems. This dual focus ensures graduates can not only use AI systems but also develop and deploy them reliably and at scale. Professor Vinay J. Ribeiro, the programme's faculty coordinator, emphasised that this deeper understanding will help learners adapt and excel in an increasingly AI-centric world.
The Bigger Picture: India’s AI Job Market
This diploma arrives at a critical time. India's demand for AI professionals is surging, with some reports projecting a need for nearly one million skilled workers by 2027. Job postings requiring AI skills more than doubled in the first quarter of FY27, indicating that employers are looking to integrate AI capabilities across various roles, not just in specialised tech positions. This boom is creating a significant talent gap. The career scope is vast, spanning startups, multinational corporations, and government projects. Roles like AI Engineer, Machine Learning Engineer, and Data Scientist are in high demand, with average salaries for experienced professionals often ranging from ₹12 lakh to ₹25 lakh per year, and senior specialists earning significantly more. This demand is driven by India's rapid digital transformation and growing investment from global tech companies.
Building a Future-Proof Career
While the salary figures are attractive, the market is evolving. Employers are increasingly looking for practical, application-based skills rather than just academic credentials. Reports show that professionals who upskill in AI see significant salary growth, with early-career individuals experiencing the largest percentage gains. The launch of IIT Bombay's diploma reflects a broader trend among premier institutes to offer executive education that bridges the gap between academic knowledge and industry needs. By combining foundational theory with hands-on learning in areas like Generative AI, the programme is positioned to equip its graduates with the relevant, production-ready skills that companies are desperately seeking. As AI becomes a general-purpose technology, such qualifications can provide a crucial competitive edge.
