A New Daily Connection
Indian Railways has launched a new daily express train connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai with Sawantwadi Road in the southern Konkan region. This service, operating as Train No. 15087 from CSMT and 15088 from Sawantwadi Road,
was introduced to meet the long-standing demand for better connectivity on this popular route. The train is expected to be a significant boon for tourists, daily commuters, and local traders by providing a reliable and convenient travel option. It aims to reduce the pressure on other Konkan-bound trains and offer passengers more choice for their travel plans.
Route and Key Halts
The new express train covers a distance of approximately 510 kilometres, with 22 strategically placed stops to enhance connectivity across the Konkan coast. After departing from CSMT, the train makes key stops within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region at Dadar, Thane, and Panvel. As it proceeds down the Konkan coast, it halts at important towns like Mangaon, Khed, Chiplun, and the district headquarters of Ratnagiri. Further south, it serves the Sindhudurg district with stops at Kankavli, Sindhudurg, and Kudal, before terminating at Sawantwadi Road, a key hub for accessing nearby tourist destinations.
Schedule and Timings
The schedule for the new service is designed for passenger convenience. Train No. 15087 departs from CSMT late at night, specifically at 11:55 PM. This allows passengers, especially those from Thane and surrounding areas, to board without travelling to South Mumbai during peak hours. The train is scheduled to reach Sawantwadi Road the following afternoon at 2:15 PM. For the return journey, Train No. 15088 departs from Sawantwadi Road at 5:20 PM and arrives at CSMT early the next morning at 6:40 AM. This overnight schedule is ideal for travellers looking to maximise their time at their destination.
Coaches and Passenger Comfort
The inaugural special train featured 16 LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches, which are known for their enhanced safety and comfort. The composition included a mix of classes to suit different budgets: one First Class coach, two AC-2 Tier coaches, three AC-3 Tier coaches, four Sleeper coaches, and four General coaches. This variety ensures that all types of travellers, from solo backpackers to families, can find a suitable option. While specific coach compositions can vary, this mix reflects a commitment to serving a wide range of passengers on this important route.
