Start With a Deeper Cleanse
High humidity means more sweat and oil on your skin's surface, which can trap dust and pollutants, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. During the monsoon, it's essential to cleanse your face thoroughly twice a day. Opt for a gentle, gel-based or foaming
cleanser, especially if you have oily skin. These formulations are effective at cutting through excess sebum without stripping the skin of its essential moisture. For those who wear makeup or sunscreen, consider double cleansing in the evening. Start with an oil-based cleanser to break down products, followed by your regular face wash to ensure your skin is perfectly clean and can breathe.
Exfoliate, But With Caution
Dullness is a common complaint during the rainy season, as dead skin cells can accumulate more quickly. Regular exfoliation is key to sloughing them away, preventing clogged pores and revealing a brighter complexion. However, it's important not to be too aggressive. Opt for a mild chemical exfoliant containing ingredients like salicylic acid (a BHA) or glycolic acid (an AHA) two to three times a week. These help dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells without the harsh scrubbing of physical exfoliants, which can cause irritation in already-sensitive monsoon skin.
Switch to a Lightweight Moisturiser
One of the biggest mistakes people make during the monsoon is skipping moisturiser because their skin already feels oily or sticky. High humidity does not equal hydrated skin. In fact, skipping this step can cause your skin to become dehydrated, prompting it to produce even more oil to compensate. The solution is to switch from heavy creams to a lightweight, non-comedogenic, gel-based moisturiser. Look for products containing hyaluronic acid, which provides a burst of hydration without feeling heavy or clogging pores.
Don't Neglect Sunscreen
It’s a persistent myth that you don’t need sunscreen on cloudy or rainy days. This is incorrect. Harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays can easily penetrate cloud cover and cause significant skin damage, including worsening pigmentation and premature ageing. Daily sunscreen application is non-negotiable, even during the monsoon. To avoid a greasy feel, choose a lightweight, gel-based or matte-finish sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. A non-comedogenic, water-resistant formula is ideal for providing protection without contributing to clogged pores or feeling heavy on the skin.
Target Monsoon-Specific Problems
The warm, damp conditions of the monsoon are an ideal breeding ground for bacteria and fungi, which can lead to issues like acne and fungal infections. To manage breakouts, incorporate a serum with niacinamide, which helps regulate oil production and calm inflammation. For active pimples, a spot treatment containing salicylic acid can be effective. To prevent fungal issues, especially on the body, it’s crucial to keep your skin dry. Change out of damp clothes immediately, dry yourself thoroughly after bathing, and consider using an antifungal powder in areas prone to moisture buildup.
Go Easy on Makeup
Heavy, layered makeup can feel suffocating in humid weather and is more likely to clog pores when mixed with sweat and oil. The monsoon is the perfect time to adopt a more minimalist makeup routine. If you choose to wear makeup, opt for lightweight, water-based, or mineral-based products that allow your skin to breathe. Always make sure to remove all traces of makeup thoroughly at the end of the day to prevent breakouts and keep your skin healthy.
