The Non-Negotiable Essentials
Before you even think about snacks or cameras, some items are absolutely critical for a pre-dawn hike. First and foremost is a reliable light source. A headlamp is strongly recommended over a handheld torch as it keeps your hands free for balancing on tricky
patches. Pack a good quality headlamp with fresh batteries, and consider carrying a small backup torch just in case. Next, trekking shoes with excellent grip are mandatory. Both Skandagiri and Savandurga have rocky, uneven, and sometimes steep sections that become treacherous without proper footwear. Finally, carry a government-issued ID proof, as it may be checked at the forest department entry point, especially for the regulated Skandagiri trek.
Layering Your Clothing for the Climb
An early morning start means you will be trekking in the cold, pre-dawn air, but the return journey will likely be under the warm morning sun. The key is to dress in layers. Start with a moisture-wicking t-shirt that pulls sweat away from your body. Add a light fleece or a warm jacket on top, which you can easily remove and stow in your backpack as the temperature rises. A lightweight, packable rain jacket or poncho is also a wise addition, as weather in the hills can be unpredictable. For bottoms, choose comfortable and quick-drying trek pants; avoid heavy jeans as they restrict movement and stay wet if they get damp.
Hydration and Energy on the Go
Staying hydrated and energized is crucial. Carry at least 1.5 to 2 litres of water per person. A hydration bladder within your backpack is a convenient option, but sturdy water bottles work just as well. Since you'll be burning a lot of energy, pack some high-energy, lightweight snacks. Nuts, dried fruits, granola bars, or energy bars are excellent choices. These are easy to eat on the move and provide a quick boost when you need it most. There are generally no food stalls along the trails, so being self-sufficient is important.
Backpack and Safety Gear
A comfortable, lightweight backpack of around 20-30 litres is ideal to carry all your essentials. Ensure it has good shoulder and waist support to avoid strain. Inside your pack, include a basic first-aid kit containing antiseptic wipes, bandages, pain relief spray, and any personal medications. A fully charged phone is a must, but since you'll be using its torch or GPS, a power bank is a lifesaver to ensure you have battery for the entire duration. A whistle is a small but potentially life-saving item to have in case you get separated from your group.
Trail-Specific Considerations
While the packing list is similar for both, there are minor differences. Savandurga is one of Asia's largest monolith hills and involves climbing on a large rock face, which can be slippery and challenging, making shoes with a superior grip even more critical. The trail markers can sometimes be faint, so it helps to stay alert. Skandagiri is a well-known night trek famous for its sunrise views above the clouds. The path includes both forest trails and rocky sections. Due to its popularity, access is often regulated, so booking your slot online in advance is usually required. Always check the latest regulations before you plan your trip.
The Nice-to-Haves for a Better Experience
Once you have the essentials covered, a few extra items can enhance your trek. A camera or a good smartphone is obvious for capturing the stunning sunrise and panoramic views. A cap or hat and sunglasses will be very useful for the descent, as the sun will be out by then. Some trekkers like to carry a small flask with a hot beverage to enjoy at the summit while waiting for the sun to appear. If trekking during the monsoon season, a waterproof bag or cover for your backpack and electronics is a smart idea to protect your gear from the rain.
