The Current Rainfall Deficit
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that rainfall in September is likely to be below normal for the country as a whole. This comes after a cumulative deficit of about 14% was recorded between June 1 and August 31. August 2026 was also
the warmest since 1901, further stressing water resources. While some parts of east, northeast, and central India may still receive normal to above-normal rain, many other regions are facing a significant shortfall. This situation is largely attributed to strengthening El Niño conditions in the Pacific Ocean, which are known to suppress monsoon rainfall in India.

A weak end to the monsoon means these reservoirs may not be fully replenished, potentially leading to water rationing and supply cuts in urban areas in the post-monsoon months.
