Declutter and Deep Clean
Before addressing specific monsoon-related issues, start with a thorough clean. Remove everything from your balcony—pots, furniture, and decor. Sweep away all dust, leaves, and debris. Pay special attention to corners where dirt accumulates. Scrub the
floor with a disinfectant cleaner to remove grime and any budding algae or moss, which can make surfaces dangerously slippery when wet. This initial reset provides a clean slate, making it easier to spot and tackle other problems.
Master Your Drainage
Waterlogging is the number one enemy of a healthy balcony during the monsoon. Stagnant water not only damages flooring and furniture but also creates a prime breeding ground for mosquitoes. Ensure your balcony's drainage outlets are completely clear of leaves, soil, and other debris. Test the slope of your floor to make sure water flows towards the drain and doesn't pool in corners. If water stagnation is a persistent issue, you might need to install additional drain points or consider using raised deck tiles that allow water to flow freely underneath.
Wage War on Pests
The monsoon is a boom time for pests, especially mosquitoes that breed in stagnant water. Even a small amount of water collected in a pot saucer or an unused container can become a mosquito nursery within days. Empty and clean all plant trays, buckets, and any other containers after every rainfall. For your plants, high humidity encourages fungal growth and attracts pests. A preventive spray of neem oil solution every 10-15 days can effectively keep most common pests and fungal issues at bay.
Rethink Your Plant Care
While the rains seem great for plants, they can also be deadly. Overwatering is a huge risk, leading to root rot. Check that every pot has clear drainage holes. It’s wise to elevate your pots on stands to prevent them from sitting in water. For most plants, the rain will provide enough water, so avoid manual watering unless the soil is dry to the touch, about one to two inches deep. It's also best to reduce fertilizing during this period, as the heavy rain leaches nutrients from the soil quickly. Move delicate plants like succulents indoors or to a sheltered spot to protect them from excessive rain.
Banish Damp and Prevent Mould
Constant moisture can lead to damp patches and mould growth on balcony walls, which is both unsightly and a health hazard. Before the season begins, inspect walls for any cracks and seal them immediately. Applying a coat of waterproof exterior paint can provide an effective barrier against moisture. Ensure good air circulation by avoiding clutter and not pushing furniture directly against the walls. If you spot mould, clean it immediately with a dedicated solution to prevent it from spreading.
Ensure Electrical Safety
Water and electricity are a dangerous mix. If you have any lights, power outlets, or other electrical fixtures on your balcony, a safety check is non-negotiable. Ensure all outdoor wiring is properly insulated and outlets have waterproof covers. Avoid using extension cords on the floor where they can come into contact with water. It's also a good practice to unplug any non-essential appliances on the balcony during heavy rain or thunderstorms to prevent damage from power surges. Never handle any electrical switches or appliances with wet hands.
