AI fluency is not about being able to build complex machine learning models. Instead, it is the ability to effectively use, collaborate with, and critically evaluate artificial intelligence systems to solve problems and improve productivity. Think of
it as a new form of digital literacy. It involves understanding how AI tools work, writing effective prompts to get desired results (prompt engineering), and recognising the technology's limitations, including potential biases and inaccuracies. For graduates, this means being able to leverage AI as a partner in daily tasks, whether it's for drafting reports, analysing data, or generating creative ideas.
A Major Shift in Employer Demand
Indian companies are increasingly seeking graduates who possess these skills. According to one recent report, job postings in India requiring AI skills more than doubled in the first quarter of FY27. This demand is no longer confined to IT roles. Fields like digital marketing, graphic design, business development, and even teaching are now listing AI capabilities as a requirement. A joint study by Cognizant and Pearson found that AI is already performing 37% of entry-level tasks in India, a rate higher than the global average. As a result, employers are looking for people who can supervise AI systems, validate their outputs, and apply human judgment where technology falls short.
The Marriage of Tech and Human Skills
As AI automates more routine tasks, uniquely human skills have become more valuable than ever. Employers in India are now looking for candidates who combine technical fluency with strong soft skills like communication, critical thinking, and adaptability. According to a report by Deloitte, the demand for candidates who pair digital expertise with strong interpersonal ability is accelerating. AI can analyse a spreadsheet, but it cannot build trust with a client or lead a team through a crisis. Therefore, the most sought-after graduates will be those who can harness the power of AI while also excelling at collaboration, problem-solving, and exercising ethical judgment.
How Indian Graduates Can Prepare
The good news is that there are many accessible ways for students to build AI fluency. The key is to move from passive awareness to active application. This can involve using generative AI tools for university projects, learning the basics of data analysis, or experimenting with workflow automation. Several free and low-cost resources are available. For example, NASSCOM's 'AI Skills Yatra' programme and the 'AI Skills Passport' from Intel and Skill India are designed to upskill Indian learners. Adding projects to a resume that demonstrate the use of AI tools to solve a problem can be a powerful way to show capability. Even for non-tech roles, familiarity with platforms like ChatGPT, data visualisation tools, and at least one major cloud platform can significantly boost a graduate's profile.
The Challenge for Universities
While students can learn independently, educational institutions have a critical role to play. Many HR professionals report that their internal training programs struggle to keep pace with the speed of AI's evolution. This puts pressure on universities to integrate practical, industry-relevant AI skills into their curricula, beyond just computer science departments. The most effective programmes will be those that combine foundational knowledge with hands-on experience through internships, live projects, and hackathons. As skills-first hiring becomes more common, a degree combined with proven, practical AI capability is what will give graduates a true competitive edge in the 2026 job market and beyond.
