The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a 'below-normal' monsoon for 2026, predicting rainfall to be around 90-92% of the Long Period Average (LPA). This shortfall is largely attributed to the development of El Niño conditions, a warming
of the Pacific Ocean that historically tends to weaken India's monsoon winds. As of early August 2026, the cumulative rainfall deficit already stood at 12% below the LPA, with significant regional variations. While some central areas received good rain in July, many districts, particularly in the north and east, have faced shortfalls, raising concerns for the agricultural season.
Why the Monsoon is a Lifeline
