For decades, passengers carrying luggage beyond the free allowance had a cumbersome but necessary task: arrive at the station early, locate the parcel office, fill out forms, get the bags weighed, and pay the fees before boarding. This often added an extra
layer of stress to the journey. A new service launched on July 31, 2026, digitises this entire process. Passengers with confirmed tickets can now declare and pay for their extra baggage from the comfort of their homes. This facility integrates luggage booking with the main ticketing system, aiming to streamline the travel experience and eliminate last-minute hassles at the station.
Know Your Free Luggage Allowance
Before you can determine if you have excess luggage, you need to know the free allowance, which varies by travel class. For each passenger, the limits are: 70 kg in AC First Class; 50 kg in AC 2-Tier and First Class; 40 kg in Sleeper Class; and 35 kg in Second Class. The allowance for AC 3-Tier, AC 3-Economy, and AC Chair Car is also 40 kg. It is important to note that children between 5 and 12 years old, who travel on a half-fare ticket, are entitled to a free baggage allowance of up to 50 kg, regardless of their travel class.
Who Can Use the Online Service?
The online booking facility is not available for all classes. It is specifically for passengers in AC First Class, AC 2-Tier, First Class, Sleeper Class, and Second Class who have confirmed tickets. Passengers travelling in AC 3-Tier, AC 3-Economy, and AC Chair Car are not eligible for this online service. This is because, for these classes, the maximum permissible luggage limit is the same as the free allowance of 40 kg, so there is no option to carry excess weight. The system is designed only for classes where passengers are permitted to carry baggage beyond the free limit by paying an additional charge.
How to Book Extra Luggage Online
Booking your excess luggage is a straightforward process. You can access the service through the official Indian Railways Parcel Portal at www.parcel.indianrail.gov.in. Once on the portal, you will need to enter your PNR number and other journey details. The system will then allow you to declare the weight of your excess luggage. After you provide these details, the portal will calculate and display the applicable charges. While the booking can be initiated online, the process isn't entirely digital just yet. After submitting the application, passengers must print the e-forwarding note and present their luggage at the originating station's parcel office for a final weighing and payment confirmation before collecting the Railway Receipt (RR).
Charges, Penalties, and Size Limits
The cost for pre-booked excess luggage is calculated at 1.5 times the standard luggage rate. The minimum charge for any excess luggage booking is ₹30. Be warned: travelling with un-booked excess luggage can be costly. If caught during the journey, the penalty is six times the standard rate, a significant increase designed to encourage pre-booking. Beyond weight, size also matters. For most classes, including AC First Class and Sleeper, the standard trunk or suitcase size should not exceed 100 cm x 60 cm x 25 cm. However, for AC 3-Tier and AC Chair Car, a smaller dimension of 55 cm x 45 cm x 22.5 cm applies. Any luggage exceeding these dimensions may need to be booked separately and carried in the brake van.
