Understanding Hydroplaning
Hydroplaning, sometimes called aquaplaning, is what happens when a layer of water builds up between your tyres and the road surface. Instead of gripping the asphalt, the tyres start to float on top of the water, much like a water ski. This leads to a sudden
and dangerous loss of traction, making it nearly impossible to steer, brake, or accelerate. The steering might feel unusually light, and the car can start to skid or drift without warning. It can happen in a fraction of a second, stripping you of control when you need it most. The primary factors that contribute to hydroplaning are vehicle speed, the depth of the water on the road, and, most critically, the condition of your tyres.
Your Tyres' First Line of Defence: Tread
Think of the grooves in your tyres as a sophisticated drainage system. Their entire purpose is to channel water away from the area where the tyre meets the road, known as the contact patch. This allows the rubber to maintain its grip on the pavement. When tyres are new, they have deep grooves that are highly effective at evacuating water. However, as tyres wear down, these grooves become shallower and less efficient. When they can no longer push water away fast enough, a wedge of water builds up in front of the tyre, lifting it off the road and causing it to hydroplane.
The Critical Check: Tread Depth
Adequate tread depth is your single most important defence against hydroplaning. While new passenger tyres have significant tread, their ability to grip on wet surfaces drops sharply once they become worn. In India, the legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm. Many tyres come with built-in Tread Wear Indicators (TWIs), which are small raised bars inside the grooves. If the surface of your tread is level with these bars, your tyres are legally worn out and must be replaced immediately. For optimal safety during the monsoon, safety experts recommend not waiting until you reach the legal limit. Replacing tyres when the tread depth is a bit more generous provides a much larger margin of safety on slick, waterlogged highways.
The Second Pillar: Correct Tyre Pressure
Tyre pressure is just as crucial as tread depth, especially during the fluctuating temperatures of the monsoon season. Your vehicle manufacturer specifies the correct pressure for a reason. Maintaining this pressure ensures the tyre keeps its optimal shape, allowing the tread to make full, even contact with the road. Under-inflated tyres can distort and collapse, reducing their ability to clear water effectively. Conversely, over-inflated tyres have a smaller contact patch with the road, which also compromises grip. Checking your tyre pressure at least once every two weeks is a simple habit that pays huge dividends in stability and control.
Beyond the Basics: Alignment and Damage
While tread and pressure are paramount, don't overlook overall tyre health. Heavy rains can easily hide deep potholes and debris that can cause damage. Regularly inspect your tyres for any cuts, cracks, or bulges on the sidewall, as these can lead to a sudden blowout. Also, pay attention to how your car drives. If it pulls to one side, your wheel alignment may be off. Misalignment causes uneven and rapid tyre wear, which can compromise the very tread you rely on for wet-weather grip.
Smart Driving Habits for Heavy Rain
Even with perfect tyres, adjusting your driving style is non-negotiable. The single most effective way to reduce the risk of hydroplaning is to slow down. Reduce your speed significantly as soon as it starts raining. Increase your following distance to at least double what you would use in dry conditions to account for longer braking distances. Avoid sudden manoeuvres and make all steering and braking inputs smoothly and gently. If possible, drive in the tracks left by the vehicle in front of you, and try to stay in the middle lanes of the highway, as water tends to pool in the outer lanes.
