The Pre-Computer Era
Before 1986, booking a train ticket was a completely manual and often grueling process. Clerks managed massive, room-sized ledgers to track reservations for each train. Passengers stood in long queues, sometimes for hours, filling out paper forms. The
system was slow, prone to human error, and lacked any centralized information. Booking a ticket for a train originating from a different city was nearly impossible unless you were physically at a counter in that region. This fragmented, paper-based method was unsustainable for a network that serves millions daily.
1986: The Dawn of Digital
The first computerized Passenger Reservation System (PRS) was introduced in 1986, starting as a pilot project in New Delhi. Developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), it was a revolutionary step. For the first time, reservations were handled electronically, drastically reducing errors and waiting times. Over the next few years, the system expanded to other major metros like Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai, but each operated as a separate, unconnected island. The big breakthrough came in 1999 with a system called CONCERT (Country-wide Network for Computerized Enhanced Reservation and Ticketing), which finally linked these regional systems. Suddenly, a passenger could book a ticket for any train, from anywhere in India, a concept that transformed travel.
Cracks in an Ageing Foundation
While the PRS was a workhorse, its core architecture, designed in a different technological era, began to show its age. The system struggled to handle the explosive growth of online bookings, which now account for nearly 89% of all reserved tickets. The existing platform can process around 32,000 bookings and 4 lakh enquiries per minute. This capacity is often overwhelmed during peak periods, especially during Tatkal booking hours, leading to the dreaded website crashes and slow performance that frustrate millions of users. Its inflexible nature also made it difficult to quickly roll out new features or changes.
The August 2026 Upgrade
Starting in August 2026, Indian Railways will begin a phased migration to a next-generation, cloud-based PRS. This new system represents a quantum leap in capacity and capability. It is designed to handle over 1.5 lakh bookings per minute—nearly five times the current load—and more than 40 lakh enquiries per minute, a tenfold increase. The transition has already started, with a new beta version of the IRCTC website launched on July 15, 2026, to test the new infrastructure under real-world conditions. The upgrade aims to make the system faster, more reliable, and far more scalable to meet future demand.
What the New System Means for You
For passengers, this upgrade promises a significantly smoother experience. The increased capacity should make the frantic scramble for Tatkal tickets less stressful and reduce system crashes during festivals. The new system will also power a host of modern features. AI-powered waitlist prediction is expected to become more accurate, and refunds for cancelled tickets are set to be processed almost instantly. Furthermore, officials have indicated that features like airline-style seat selection could be integrated, allowing passengers to choose their preferred seats while booking. This shift is part of a larger digital push by the Railways, which includes the all-in-one RailOne app for a seamless travel experience.
