Use a Dedicated Spending Account
One of the most effective ways to control UPI spending is to stop using your main salary account for daily transactions. Instead, open a separate, zero-balance savings account. At the beginning of each month, transfer a fixed budget for your discretionary
expenses into this account and link it to your UPI apps. Once the funds run out, your transactions will simply be declined, acting as a hard stop for your spending. This strategy keeps your primary savings untouched and makes you more conscious of your monthly cash flow.
Review and Categorise Your Spends
The frictionless nature of UPI can make you lose track of where your money is going. Make it a weekly habit to review your transaction history. All UPI apps provide a detailed digital ledger of your payments. Go a step further by using a budgeting app that helps you categorise these expenses. Many apps can automatically read your transaction SMS alerts and sort them into categories like food, travel, and shopping, giving you a clear picture of your spending patterns. Some apps, like the revamped BHIM 3.0, have built-in spending analytics to do this for you.
Set Self-Imposed Spending Limits
While most popular UPI apps don't allow you to set custom daily transaction limits, your bank’s own mobile app or net banking portal often does. Banks like HDFC, ICICI, and SBI allow customers to manually lower their daily UPI transaction cap. Setting a lower limit acts as a financial safety net against both impulse purchases and potential fraud. Alternatively, you can use features like UPI Circle on the BHIM app to set spending limits for family members, which can also be adapted for personal use.
Automate Your Savings with UPI
Use the power of UPI for good by automating your savings. Set up a recurring UPI mandate to transfer a small amount from your spending account to your savings or investment account every day or week. This “pay yourself first” approach ensures that you are consistently putting money aside before you have a chance to spend it. Automating even a small amount helps build a disciplined saving habit over time with minimal effort.
Leverage UPI Lite for Small Spends
For your daily chai, snacks, and other small-ticket purchases, use UPI Lite. This feature, available on many payment apps, is a wallet where you can load a certain amount (up to ₹5,000) for quick payments up to ₹1,000 without a PIN. By pre-loading your weekly budget for petty expenses into UPI Lite, you create a clear boundary for your small, miscellaneous spending. It also helps declutter your bank statement, as these minor transactions don't pass through your core banking system each time.
Use the 'Request Money' Feature for Splits
When you're splitting bills with friends, avoid the hassle of fronting the money and then chasing them for their share. Instead of paying for everyone and waiting for them to send money, use the 'Request Money' or 'Split Bill' feature in your UPI app. Send each person a payment request for their exact share. The app will notify them, and they can pay with a single tap. It’s a simple, non-confrontational way to ensure you get your money back promptly without awkward follow-ups.
