The Coder's New Colleague
In the world of software development, once the exclusive domain of human logic, AI has become a powerful collaborator. Rather than replacing developers, AI tools like GitHub Copilot are acting as productivity multipliers. They handle the repetitive, time-consuming
tasks that can lead to burnout, such as writing boilerplate code, automating tests, and spotting bugs early. This frees up developers to focus on higher-level challenges: system architecture, creative problem-solving, and ensuring the code AI generates is secure and effective. The role is shifting from pure creator to that of an overseer and architect, guiding AI to build better software faster. This shift is also changing team dynamics, allowing junior developers to learn faster and senior engineers to focus on more strategic decisions.
A New Canvas for Advertising
The advertising and creative industries, long considered safe from automation due to their reliance on human ingenuity, are also experiencing an AI-driven transformation. Generative AI can now draft ad copy, design prototypes, generate visual assets from text prompts, and even compose music for commercials. This doesn't spell the end for human creativity. Instead, it automates the grunt work, allowing creative professionals to brainstorm, strategize, and refine at a much faster pace. An ad team can now generate dozens of visual concepts in the time it once took to sketch one. The human role is evolving to become one of curating, directing, and providing the strategic insight that ensures a campaign resonates with its intended audience.
Redefining Customer Service
The impact is perhaps most visible in customer service, a massive industry in India. AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants are increasingly handling routine customer queries. This has led to concerns about job displacement, particularly in the BPO sector. However, the story is more complex. By automating basic inquiries, AI frees up human agents to tackle more complex, sensitive, and high-value customer issues that require empathy and nuanced problem-solving. The job is becoming less about following a script and more about sophisticated communication and relationship management. This shift creates a demand for more experienced professionals who can manage intricate customer needs.
A Two-Tier Job Market in India
Recent data suggests that in India, AI is currently creating more jobs than it is eliminating. A Nomura report covering 2022 to August 2026 found that India saw 83,100 AI-related hires, significantly outpacing the 31,921 layoffs attributed to the technology. However, this positive headline masks a significant shift in the labour market. Companies are reducing hiring for entry-level roles as AI automates routine tasks once performed by junior employees. This is creating a 'two-tier' job market where demand for experienced workers with deep business context grows, while opportunities for freshers in traditional roles shrink. The challenge for India, a country with a massive young workforce, is to ensure new entrants have the necessary skills to collaborate with, manage, and develop AI systems, rather than compete with them for routine tasks.
