When we think of poor sleep during the monsoon, our minds often jump to the obvious culprits: the relentless drumming of heavy rain, the dramatic clap of thunder, or the infuriating buzz of a lone mosquito. While these are certainly valid sleep disruptors,
they are only part of the story. The season brings a host of more subtle, environmental and physiological changes that quietly wreak havoc on our ability to get a restful night's sleep. Understanding these less obvious factors is the first step toward reclaiming our slumber during the wet months. Many of these issues are interconnected, creating a perfect storm for sleep deprivation that leaves you feeling tired and sluggish.
The Unseen Enemy: Humidity
The single biggest, yet most underestimated, sleep disruptor during the monsoon is the sharp rise in humidity. High humidity makes the air feel heavy and much warmer than it is, preventing your body from cooling itself effectively through sweat evaporation. This is a problem because a slight drop in core body temperature is a crucial signal for your brain to initiate and maintain deep sleep. When you’re sticky and uncomfortable, your body struggles to regulate its temperature, leading to more frequent awakenings, night sweats, and less time spent in the most restorative stages of sleep, like REM and deep sleep. This can leave you feeling unrefreshed, even after a full eight hours in bed.
The Light and Rhythm Disconnect
Our bodies run on an internal clock, or circadian rhythm, which is heavily influenced by light exposure. The monsoon's dark, overcast days can throw this rhythm out of sync. Reduced exposure to natural sunlight during the day can confuse our bodies, leading to lower energy levels and a feeling of lethargy, often called monsoon fatigue. This can make you feel sleepy at the wrong times and, paradoxically, more alert when it's time to sleep. This disruption can affect the production of melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep, making it harder to fall asleep at night.
Lifestyle Shifts and Allergens
The monsoon often forces changes in our daily routines. We tend to exercise less and spend more time indoors, which can reduce the natural sleep pressure that builds from physical activity. Furthermore, the damp environment is a breeding ground for allergens like mold and dust mites, which can thrive in bedding and around the house. For many, this triggers allergies, congestion, and other respiratory issues that make breathing difficult at night, leading to fragmented sleep. We also tend to change our diet, often consuming heavier, fried 'rainy day' comfort foods that can be harder to digest, further impacting sleep quality.
How to Win Back Your Sleep
Fortunately, you don't have to simply endure months of poor sleep. By taking proactive steps to manage your sleep environment and daily habits, you can significantly improve your rest. The key is to counteract the effects of humidity, regulate light exposure, and maintain a consistent routine. Simple changes can make a world of difference in helping your body find its rhythm again, even when the weather outside is chaotic.
Control Your Bedroom Climate
Tackle humidity head-on. If possible, use a dehumidifier to maintain an ideal humidity level, typically between 40-50%. Air conditioners also help by cooling and drying the air. Ensure good ventilation by opening windows for a while when it's not raining to prevent the air from becoming stagnant. Opt for lightweight, breathable cotton sheets and sleepwear that wick moisture away from your body. Using a light blanket instead of a heavy quilt can also prevent overheating.
Reset Your Internal Clock
Consistency is your best friend. Try to wake up and go to bed at the same time every day, even on weekends. As soon as you wake up, get as much bright light as you can. Open the curtains or sit on a covered balcony for at least 20-30 minutes. This helps anchor your circadian rhythm. In the evening, wind down by dimming the lights and avoiding bright screens from phones and TVs at least an hour before bed, as the blue light can suppress melatonin production. A warm (not hot) bath before bed can also help, as the subsequent drop in body temperature can signal that it's time for sleep.
