All Aboard the Legendary Mandovi Express
At the heart of this experience is the Mandovi Express. Named after Goa's famous river, this train connects Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) with Madgaon in Goa, running daily. The journey takes approximately 12 to 14 hours, offering a day-long spectacle of the Konkan coast's beauty. The train itself has garnered a reputation among rail enthusiasts, not just for its scenic route but also for its onboard experience, earning the affectionate nickname "The Food Queen of Konkan Railways." As the train chugs along, passengers are treated to a constantly changing canvas of paddy fields, dense forests, and charming villages that define coastal Maharashtra and Goa.
The Showstopper: Dudhsagar Falls
The undeniable highlight for many travellers on this route during the monsoon is the majestic Dudhsagar Falls. Located on the Goa-Karnataka border, the name translates to "Sea of Milk," and during the rains, it lives up to it spectacularly. As the train approaches the falls, it slows down to cross a viaduct, offering passengers a direct, breathtaking view of the water cascading down from a height of over 300 meters. The sheer volume and force of the water create a thunderous roar and a fine mist that often envelops the train, making it an immersive and unforgettable experience. This view is the primary reason many choose this specific journey, as the train provides one of the only safe and legal ways to witness the falls in their full monsoon glory.

While Dudhsagar is the main attraction, the entire journey is dotted with countless other waterfalls. The monsoon rains feed innumerable streams that cascade down the hillsides of the Western Ghats. Book your tickets on the Mandovi Express (10103 from Mumbai or 10104 from Madgaon) well in advance, as this is a popular route. For the best views of Dudhsagar Falls, try to get a seat on the right side of the train when travelling from the Kulem side towards Castle Rock (southbound). While the train offers catering, packing some of your own snacks and a thermos of hot tea or coffee can enhance the cozy experience of watching the rain-lashed world go by. Keep your camera ready, but also take moments to simply look out the window and absorb the serene, rain-soaked beauty of the Konkan.
