The Metro: Your All-Night Artery
The Kolkata Metro is undoubtedly the lifeline for pandal hoppers. During the main Puja days, from Saptami to Navami, metro services are typically extended to run all night, often until 4 AM. This makes it the most reliable and efficient way to travel
long distances between North and South Kolkata, bypassing the chaotic road traffic. Metro Railway often runs additional services on weekends leading up to the Puja to manage the shopping rush. To make the most of it, plan your pandal clusters around key metro stations. For North Kolkata's traditional pujas, stations like Shyambazar, Girish Park, and Sovabazar Sutanuti are crucial. For the famous theme pandals of the South, target stations like Jatin Das Park, Kalighat, and Rabindra Sarobar. Be prepared for large crowds on platforms, but the system is generally well-managed during the festive season. A tourist smart card can be a great investment for unlimited rides over one or three days.
Buses: The 24/7 Surface Connectors
To complement the metro, the West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) rolls out an extensive network of special bus services. This includes hundreds of new buses and, most importantly, night-long services that run from Saptami through Navami across the city and its suburbs. These buses are an affordable way to reach areas not directly served by the metro. The government also organizes special 'Puja Parikrama' bus tours. These are curated packages, often available in both AC and non-AC options, that take you to a series of famous and heritage pandals, sometimes including meals or refreshments. This is an excellent option for those who prefer a structured tour without the stress of planning routes themselves.
Autos and Taxis: For The Last Mile
Auto-rickshaws and yellow taxis are Kolkata classics, but they come with challenges during Puja. Expect significantly hiked fares, with drivers often charging double or triple the normal rate, especially at night and on popular routes. Negotiation is key, but be prepared for high demand. Ride-hailing apps like Uber and Ola are also available, but surge pricing will be in full effect, and finding a cab in a crowded area can be a test of patience. Often, due to police barricades for crowd control, cars and autos can only drop you a considerable distance from the main pandal, meaning a fair bit of walking is unavoidable. Use them strategically for short distances or to get from a metro station to a specific pandal, rather than for cross-city journeys.
Ferries: The Scenic River Route
Don't overlook the Hooghly river as a transport option. Special ferry services often operate during Durga Puja, connecting ghats like Bagbazar, Shibpur, and Howrah. This can be a brilliant way to bypass traffic on the heavily congested Howrah Bridge and other crossings. It's particularly useful for hopping between pandals in North Kolkata and those across the river in Howrah. Some private operators even offer special Puja cruises that combine a comfortable journey with dinner and festive music, providing a unique and relaxed viewing experience from the water. Timings are usually extended for the festival, offering a tranquil alternative to the packed streets.
Strategic Pandal Hopping on Foot
The most immersive way to experience the festival is by walking. Pandal hopping often involves a lot of walking anyway, as many roads are blocked for vehicles. A smart strategy is to pick a neighbourhood, travel there by metro or bus, and then explore a cluster of nearby pandals on foot. North Kolkata is particularly suited for this, as many traditional pandals are located close to each other in narrow lanes. Similarly, you can explore clusters in South Kolkata around areas like Gariahat or Rashbehari. Always wear comfortable footwear, as you can easily clock over 20,000 steps in a single night. Planning your route with Google Maps ahead of time can help you create efficient walking tours.
