Why Monsoon Means More Breakouts
That sticky, greasy feeling on your skin during the monsoon isn't just in your head. High humidity signals your sebaceous glands to produce more oil (sebum). This excess oil, combined with sweat, dust, and environmental pollutants, creates the perfect
recipe for clogged pores. This warm, moist environment also becomes a breeding ground for acne-causing bacteria, leading to an increase in pimples, blackheads, and painful flare-ups that can affect the face, back, and arms. Dermatologists often see a rise in acne cases during this season for this very reason.
The Easy Trick: Master the Double Cleanse
The single most effective trick to combat monsoon acne is adopting the double cleansing method, a cornerstone of Korean skincare routines. Simply washing your face once, especially in the evening, often isn't enough to remove the stubborn layers of sunscreen, makeup, excess oil, and grime that accumulate in humid weather. Double cleansing ensures your skin is impeccably clean without being harsh. It involves using two different types of cleansers, one after the other, to remove every trace of impurity and prepare your skin for the rest of your routine.
Step 1: The Oil-Based Cleanser
The first step involves using an oil-based cleanser or micellar water. This might sound counterintuitive for oily skin, but oil-based cleansers are brilliant at dissolving oil-based impurities. Think of things like your waterproof sunscreen, long-wear foundation, and the excess sebum your skin has produced. These won't wash away properly with just a water-based face wash. Gently massage the oil cleanser onto your dry face for about a minute, focusing on areas where makeup and oil build up. This step lifts the grime from the surface and deep within your pores. Then, rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
Step 2: The Water-Based Cleanser
Immediately after rinsing off the oil cleanser, follow up with a gentle, water-based face wash. This second step removes any remaining residue from the first cleanse, along with water-based impurities like sweat and dirt. For acne-prone skin, dermatologists often recommend a foaming or gel cleanser containing salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that exfoliates inside the pores, clearing out the clogs that lead to breakouts. This two-step process leaves your skin completely clean, balanced, and better able to absorb the products that follow.
Essential Supporting Habits
While double cleansing is a game-changer, a few other simple habits will support your journey to clear monsoon skin. First, don't skip your moisturiser. Even oily skin needs hydration, as stripping it can trigger even more oil production. Opt for a lightweight, gel-based, non-comedogenic formula that hydrates without clogging pores. Second, exfoliate, but gently. Use a chemical exfoliant with ingredients like salicylic or mandelic acid once or twice a week to remove dead skin cells. Avoid harsh physical scrubs, which can irritate the skin. Finally, always wear sunscreen. Up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate clouds, and sun exposure can worsen inflammation and post-acne marks. Choose a gel-based or matte-finish sunscreen with at least SPF 30.
