A Welcome Boost for Konkan Travel
Central Railway has launched a new daily express train connecting Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) with Sawantwadi Road in South Konkan. This service was inaugurated on September 3, 2026, to meet the long-standing demand for better
connectivity between the bustling metropolis and key destinations in the Sindhudurg district. Spanning a 510-kilometre route, the train is expected to be a game-changer for tourists and local traders alike, enhancing access to the region's historical forts, pristine beaches, and popular towns near the Goa border. Officials expect this new daily service to reduce the passenger load on other Konkan-bound trains that depart from Dadar and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus.
Your Daily Timetable for a Weekend Escape
Designed with convenience in mind, the train facilitates an overnight journey, allowing travellers to maximise their weekend. Train No. 15087 departs from CSMT at 11:55 PM daily, arriving at Sawantwadi Road at 2:15 PM the next afternoon. For the return leg, Train No. 15088 leaves Sawantwadi Road at 5:20 PM and reaches CSMT at 6:40 AM the following morning, making it perfect for those who need to be back in the city for the start of the week. The train features a composition of 16 LHB coaches, including First Class, AC-2 Tier, AC-3 Tier, Sleeper, and General coaches, catering to various budgets and comfort levels.
Key Destinations on the Route
The new service makes several sought-after Konkan destinations more accessible than ever. The route includes numerous stops, effectively opening up the entire coastal belt for exploration. Key tourist hubs like Ratnagiri, known for its Alphonso mangoes and serene beaches, are on the list. Further south, the train stops at Kankavli, Kudal, and Sindhudurg, which serve as gateways to popular spots like the pristine beaches of Tarkarli and the historic Sindhudurg Fort. The final stop, Sawantwadi, is famous for its traditional wooden toys and its proximity to the hill station of Amboli.
Beyond the New Service: Other Scenic Options
While the new daily express offers great utility, travellers seeking a more scenic and luxurious journey can also opt for the Vistadome coach experience. These special coaches, attached to trains like the CSMT-Madgaon Jan Shatabdi Express and the Tejas Express, feature panoramic glass windows and transparent roofs, offering breathtaking views of the Western Ghats. The journey is an attraction in itself, winding through lush green valleys, tunnels, and past waterfalls. These premium services provide rotating seats and an observation lounge, turning the travel into a memorable part of the vacation. They are especially popular during the monsoon when the Konkan landscape is at its most vibrant.
How to Plan and Book Your Trip
Tickets for the new Mumbai-Sawantwadi Express, as well as other services like the Tejas and Jan Shatabdi, can be booked through the official IRCTC website and mobile app. Given the high demand for Konkan travel, especially during long weekends and festival seasons like Ganeshotsav, it is highly advisable to book your tickets well in advance. For the new daily express, passengers can choose from a range of classes to suit their needs. For those planning a last-minute trip, Central Railway often announces special unreserved services during peak festival times to manage the rush. Always check the latest schedule and availability before finalising your plans.
