The Wave of Shutdowns
Across India, a significant number of technical and engineering colleges are closing their doors. In the 2025-26 academic year alone, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) confirmed the "progressive closure" of 58 such institutions. This
means they can no longer admit new students, though current ones can complete their degrees. The trend is not isolated, with data showing 342 AICTE-approved institutions closing over the last three academic years. States like Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra have seen the highest number of these shutdowns. The reasons cited by the regulatory body are consistent: chronically low student admissions, a shortage of qualified faculty, and a failure to meet infrastructure and quality standards. Many of these colleges, particularly private ones in smaller cities, struggled to fill even half their seats, making them financially unviable.
The Demand Paradox
While these institutions fade away, student interest has dramatically shifted towards a specific set of future-focused specialisations. Courses in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Data Science are seeing unprecedented demand. One report noted a 107% year-on-year increase in enrolments for generative AI courses on a popular online platform. This surge is driven by a clear understanding that these fields offer high-growth, well-paying careers right out of college. The demand is so strong that some reports indicate nearly 75% of seats in these modern engineering programs are being filled quickly, while traditional branches like mechanical or civil engineering struggle to attract students. This shift in preference highlights a clear mismatch between the courses many older, now-closing colleges were offering and what today's students and the job market actually want.
A Squeeze on Seats and Opportunity
The closure of colleges, even those of lower quality, has a direct impact on the total number of available seats. Alongside the 58 institutional closures in 2025-26, the AICTE also approved the discontinuation of more than 950 individual engineering and technical courses across the country. This reduction in supply, coupled with surging demand for specific high-tech courses, creates a significant bottleneck. Competition for places in the remaining reputable institutions intensifies, driving up cut-off marks and putting immense pressure on students. The practical reality for an aspiring engineer is a tougher, more competitive admission process for the courses that are most likely to lead to a job. This squeeze disproportionately affects students who may not have the resources to compete for the top-tier national institutes, leaving them with fewer viable options.
The Student's Practical Dilemma
For students and their families, this situation presents a series of difficult questions. With fewer seats in high-demand fields, what is the backup plan? Does one settle for a less desirable course in a better-ranked college, or take a chance on a lower-tier institution that offers the right specialisation but may lack quality and placement support? The financial and mental toll of this uncertainty is substantial. Students are increasingly forced to look for alternatives, from online certifications to studying abroad, to gain the skills they believe are necessary for a good career. This landscape reflects a broader shift where simply holding an engineering degree is no longer enough; the focus is now on employability and a tangible return on the investment in education.
