One is called Chain-of-Thought (CoT) prompting, where the AI is instructed to break down its reasoning step-by-step before giving a final answer. This makes it easier to spot logical flaws. Another powerful method is grounding responses in sources by using phrases like “According to…” or demanding an immediate citation for every factual claim. Some templates even instruct the AI to adopt a specific persona, such as a skeptical peer reviewer, or to explicitly state “I don't know” if it cannot find a verifiable source for a claim. By combining these commands, a researcher can build a template that forces the AI to check its work and stay within factual boundaries.

In universities and research labs, this structured approach is changing how AI is used. Instead of a one-shot query, research becomes a more deliberate dialogue. A student might use a template that specifies the output format, defines the target audience, and instructs the AI to ground all claims in peer-reviewed papers published after a certain date. Experts caution that prompt engineering is a powerful way to improve accuracy, but it is not a perfect solution. The final responsibility for verifying facts always rests with the human researcher. The maxim “trust, but verify” has never been more relevant. These templates are a crucial layer of defense, but they are not a substitute for critical thinking and careful validation.
