The Allure of the Package Deal
In the world of travel, convenience is king. Online travel agencies and tour operators have perfected the art of the package deal, bundling flights, accommodation, and sometimes even tours into a single, attractive price. It simplifies planning, often
saves money, and removes the headache of juggling multiple bookings. It's no wonder that millions of travellers opt for these deals every year. The assumption is often that because it's a 'package', everything is taken care of. While providers do have responsibilities, especially if they cancel or significantly alter the trip, this protection has firm limits. It is a safety net for the services they sold you, not a comprehensive shield against the many other things that can go wrong on a journey.
The Critical Medical Coverage Gap
This is the single most important reason to buy separate travel insurance. Your package deal protection will not cover you if you get sick or have an accident abroad. Your domestic health insurance plan is also unlikely to cover medical bills from another country. An unexpected illness or injury can lead to staggering hospital costs, and some international hospitals may even require upfront payment before providing treatment. A good travel insurance policy with emergency medical benefits can cover these expenses, from a doctor's visit to hospitalisation and even costly medical evacuation to get you to a suitable facility or back home. Without it, you are personally liable for the full amount, which can run into lakhs or even crores of rupees.
When You Are the One Who Cancels
A package provider might offer a refund if they cancel the trip. But what if you need to cancel? Travel insurance is designed for this scenario. If you have to call off your trip for a covered reason—such as a sudden illness, a family emergency, or a job loss—trip cancellation coverage can reimburse you for your prepaid and non-refundable costs. Your package deal will not refund you if you cancel because a family member fell ill, but travel insurance often will. This protects the money you've invested in your holiday, a protection that the convenience of a bundled booking simply doesn't offer.
Protecting Your Belongings and More
Travel insurance goes far beyond just flights and hotels. What happens if the airline loses your luggage, or your bag containing valuables is stolen from your hotel room? While airlines have limited liability for lost baggage, it often doesn't cover the full value of your items. Travel insurance can provide coverage for lost, stolen, or damaged baggage, and can also provide funds for essential items if your bags are delayed. Furthermore, policies can cover issues like significant travel delays, reimbursing you for meals and accommodation, or personal liability in case you accidentally cause injury to someone or damage their property while abroad. These are risks that exist completely outside the scope of a flight-plus-hotel deal.
Understanding Your Rights in India
For travellers in India, there are specific protections under the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Consumer Protection Act. These rules mandate that airlines provide compensation, meals, and even accommodation for significant delays, cancellations, or denied boarding. If an airline or travel provider fails in their service, you can seek redress through consumer courts. However, these rights are focused on service deficiencies from the provider. They do not cover personal emergencies that force you to change your plans, medical issues you face on the trip, or your lost belongings. The provider's responsibility ends with delivering the travel service; your personal safety and financial security are up to you.
Choosing the Right Safety Net
When buying insurance, don't just click the cheapest add-on offered during checkout. Look for a comprehensive policy. Differentiate between basic trip insurance (which covers cancellations and interruptions) and travel medical insurance (which focuses on health emergencies). Many comprehensive plans cover both. Read the policy details carefully to understand the coverage limits, the list of covered reasons for cancellation, and any exclusions, such as for pre-existing medical conditions or high-risk adventure sports. The small amount you spend on a robust policy is a fraction of what you could lose if something unexpected happens.
