A Major Boost in Performance
The most significant change is a massive upgrade in the website's core infrastructure. The old system, which often buckled under pressure during peak Tatkal hours, could handle around 32,000 bookings per minute. The new portal increases this capacity
nearly five-fold to over 1.5 lakh bookings per minute. Similarly, the system can now handle 40 lakh enquiries per minute, a ten-fold increase from the previous 4 lakh. For the user, this means a lower likelihood of website crashes, frozen screens, and the dreaded 'Service Unavailable' error right when the booking window opens.
A Cleaner and Faster Booking Flow
The user interface has been redesigned to make booking faster and more intuitive. One of the most practical changes is the removal of excessive CAPTCHA prompts that often slowed users down at critical moments. The new interface is cleaner, removing unnecessary pop-ups and flashing advertisements that previously cluttered the screen. Another time-saving feature is the new unified seat availability view. Instead of having to search for each class (Sleeper, 3AC, 2AC) separately, users can now see the availability across all classes on a single screen, making it easier to quickly choose an alternative if the preferred class is full.
New Features for Smarter Planning
The upgrade introduces a few new tools that give passengers more control and flexibility. A 'fare calendar' has been added, allowing users to view and compare ticket prices across different dates. While this is more useful for flexible travel, it marks a significant step in making the platform more user-centric. Another highly requested feature is the ability to select a preferred seat or berth during the booking process, similar to airline websites, rather than having one assigned automatically. The platform will also support multiple Indian languages, making it more accessible to a wider audience.
Mandatory Aadhaar OTP for Security
To ensure fairness and crack down on the use of bots and unauthorized agents, IRCTC has made Aadhaar-based OTP authentication mandatory for all online Tatkal bookings starting July 15. Users must ensure their IRCTC account is linked with their Aadhaar number to book a Tatkal ticket. During the booking process, an OTP will be sent to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar, which must be entered to complete the transaction. This measure is designed to ensure that genuine passengers have a better chance at securing tickets.
How to Prepare for the New System
While the new system is designed to be more efficient, preparation remains key to successfully booking a Tatkal ticket. First, ensure your IRCTC account is linked with your Aadhaar well in advance. Second, continue using the 'Master List' feature to save passenger details beforehand; this allows you to add passengers to a booking with a single click. Finally, have your payment details ready. The fastest methods are typically IRCTC's eWallet or UPI, as they require fewer steps than net banking or credit/debit cards, saving you crucial seconds during the booking rush.
