The engine room of India's IT services industry is feeling the heat. For decades, the sector thrived by deploying vast armies of engineers for tasks like software maintenance, testing, customer support, and business process outsourcing. Now, AI is proving
capable of automating a significant portion of this work. Some industry estimates suggest that new AI tools can handle up to 70-80% of routine software development and support tasks. This has led to a structural shift, where companies are seeing reduced demand for entry-level talent to handle repetitive jobs. Consequently, hiring for junior roles has slowed, and some of the industry's largest players have seen their headcounts shrink as they recalibrate for an AI-first world.
The Dawn of New Roles
While AI is eliminating some roles, it is simultaneously creating a host of new, highly specialized ones. The demand for professionals who can build, manage, and leverage AI is exploding. Job postings for AI skills in India more than doubled in the first quarter of FY27. The market is now fiercely competing for Machine Learning Engineers, Data Scientists, AI Specialists, Prompt Engineers, and AI Ethics Officers. These are not just roles within tech firms; sectors like banking, finance, healthcare, and e-commerce are all hiring AI talent to drive everything from fraud detection to personalized marketing. This has created a significant demand gap, with NASSCOM highlighting a 17x demand-supply gap for certain advanced skills like LLM fine-tuning.
The Great Reskilling Imperative
The transition from the old reality to the new one hinges on a single, massive undertaking: reskilling. The skills that were once the bedrock of an IT career are becoming obsolete, replaced by a new stack of AI-centric abilities. Today, proficiency in Python, SQL, cloud platforms like AWS or Azure, and machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch are baseline requirements for many top-tier jobs. Recognizing this, both the industry and government have launched large-scale initiatives. NASSCOM reports that over 2 million IT professionals were upskilled in AI in FY26 alone. For individuals, career growth is no longer about job-hopping but about acquiring deep expertise in these emerging technologies, which can significantly boost earning potential.
From Global Back Office to Innovation Hub
This AI-driven disruption is catalysing a fundamental change in the identity of India's IT industry. The old model, often described as 'body-shopping' or providing talent for hire, is under threat. The new opportunity lies in moving up the value chain. Instead of just maintaining systems built elsewhere, the focus is shifting to building innovative, AI-powered products and solutions in India. This pivot requires a different kind of workforce—one that combines technical AI skills with critical thinking, problem-solving, and domain-specific knowledge to create value. AI is not just a tool for efficiency; it's the core component of new revenue streams that could add up to $500 billion to India's GDP by 2025, according to NASSCOM estimates.
