Choose Your Bag Wisely
The first step to successful carry-on travel is having the right bag. Most domestic airlines in India, such as Air India and IndiGo, permit one piece of cabin baggage. The standard dimensions are typically around 55 cm in height, 35-40 cm in length, and 20-25
cm in width. A soft-shell suitcase or a travel backpack is often more forgiving than a hard-shell case if you need to squeeze it into a tight overhead bin. Before you pack a single item, check your airline's specific rules. Most airlines also allow one personal item, like a laptop bag or a small handbag, which can provide valuable extra space for essentials you need to access quickly.
The Capsule Wardrobe Method
The secret to packing light is not about having fewer options, but about making every item work harder. Embrace the capsule wardrobe concept: a small collection of items that can be easily mixed and matched. For a four-day trip, this is surprisingly simple. Plan around a core colour palette, like navy, grey, or beige, and add pops of colour with your tops or accessories. A good rule of thumb is the 5-4-3-2-1 method, which can be adapted. A sample list could include: three tops, two bottoms (like a pair of jeans and versatile trousers), two pairs of shoes (one for walking, one smarter option), and one layering piece like a jacket or cardigan. Every top should work with every bottom, instantly multiplying your outfit combinations without adding bulk.
Master the Art of Rolling
When it comes to the great debate of rolling versus folding, rolling is the clear winner for saving space and minimising wrinkles in most fabrics. Tightly rolled clothes can be packed more densely than folded ones. For an even greater level of organisation, invest in packing cubes. These fabric pouches allow you to compartmentalise your items—tops in one, bottoms in another, underwear in a third. This not only keeps your suitcase tidy but also provides gentle compression, allowing you to fit more in. You can even use one cube for clean clothes and bring along an empty one for laundry, making unpacking at the end of your trip a breeze.
Conquer Your Toiletries
Liquids are often the biggest hurdle in carry-on packing. Remember the universal rule: containers must be 100ml or less and fit into a single, transparent, resealable one-litre bag. The key is to decant your favourite products into travel-sized bottles. Better yet, switch to solid toiletries. Shampoo bars, conditioner bars, solid perfumes, and toothpaste tablets are game-changers, as they don't count towards your liquid allowance. Many hotels provide basic toiletries, so consider leaving items like shampoo and body wash at home if you're not particular about brands. Create a dedicated travel toiletry kit that is always packed and ready to go to save time before every trip.
Pack Smart, Travel Smart
Your travel day outfit is a strategic part of your packing plan. Always wear your bulkiest items—like hiking boots, a coat, or your heaviest jumper—on the plane. This frees up a significant amount of space in your luggage. Consolidate your electronics by bringing a universal adapter and a power bank, ensuring all your devices can be charged from a single source. Finally, do a last-minute edit. Lay everything out on your bed before it goes in the bag. Look at each item and ask yourself if you truly need it. More often than not, you can remove one or two 'just in case' items that you won't miss.
