Understanding the Revision Drive
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has initiated a Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls across 17 states and Union Territories, including Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat, and West Bengal. This annual exercise aims to add newly eligible
voters, remove ineligible names, and, most importantly, allow existing voters to correct any errors in their details. Having an accurate Voter ID is essential not just for voting, but also as a valid proof of identity across India. This drive presents a key opportunity for every citizen in these states to ensure their information is up-to-date before the final rolls are published.
The Master Key: Form 8
In the past, different updates required different forms. Now, the process is streamlined. Form 8 is the single, multipurpose application you will need for most changes. Whether you need to change your address, correct your name or date of birth, update your photograph, or even request a replacement card, Form 8 is the tool for the job. You can fill out and submit this form online through the official Voter Service Portal (voters.eci.gov.in) or offline by submitting a physical copy to your local Booth Level Officer (BLO).
Documents for a Change of Address
If you have moved your residence, updating your address is mandatory to vote in your new constituency. For this, you will need to upload a self-attested copy of a valid address proof document. The most commonly accepted documents include: your Aadhaar card, a recent utility bill (like electricity, water, or gas from the last year), a current bank or post office passbook, a registered rent agreement, or your Indian passport. Ensure the document clearly shows your new address.
Documents for Correcting Personal Details
Mistakes in your name, age, or gender can cause issues during voting and other official verifications. To correct these details, you'll need specific documents. For a name correction (e.g., a spelling mistake or a legal name change), a PAN card, Aadhaar card, or marriage certificate is usually required. For correcting your date of birth, a birth certificate, Class 10 or 12 marksheet, or your PAN card are acceptable proofs. To update your photograph, you simply need to upload a recent passport-sized colour photo with a plain background.
How to Submit Your Application
The easiest way to submit your application is online. Visit the Voter Service Portal (voters.eci.gov.in), log in with your mobile number, and select Form 8. The portal will guide you through filling in your details and uploading scanned copies of your documents (usually JPEG or PDF, up to 2MB). After submission, you will receive a reference number to track your application's status. Alternatively, you can download Form 8, print it, fill it out, attach physical copies of your proofs, and submit it to your area's Booth Level Officer (BLO) or at the nearest Electoral Registration Office. Once submitted, a BLO typically conducts a verification before your details are officially updated.
