The Magic of an Early Winter Drive
The period from October to February is widely considered the sweet spot for road trips to Coorg and Wayanad. The heavy monsoon rains leave the countryside exceptionally vibrant and green, with waterfalls in full flow and lakes brimming. The weather strikes
a perfect balance: days are comfortably warm, while nights and early mornings are crisp and cool, perfect for driving with the windows down. This is when the region’s famous mist rolls through the valleys, wrapping coffee and spice plantations in a soft, ethereal blanket, creating a picture-perfect setting for a memorable drive. It’s an ideal climate for sightseeing, photography, and simply savouring the journey.
Route 1: The Classic Drive to Coorg
The most popular and well-maintained route to Coorg is the 265-kilometre journey via NH275, passing through Mysore. Leaving Bengaluru early, ideally before 6 AM, helps you beat the city traffic. The drive is a delight, with smooth highways taking you past towns like Ramanagara and Channapatna, famous for its wooden toys. A worthwhile stop is the Tibetan settlement of Bylakuppe, home to the stunning Namdroling Monastery, also known as the Golden Temple. As you approach Kushalnagar, the landscape transforms, with winding roads ascending into the hills. From here, you can visit the Dubare Elephant Camp before heading to Madikeri, the heart of Coorg. The final stretch through dense coffee plantations, with the air rich with the aroma of arabica and pepper, is the true reward.
Route 2: The Wild Journey to Wayanad
The drive to Wayanad is an adventure in itself, taking you through some of South India's most important wildlife corridors. The most scenic and popular route, spanning about 280 kilometres, is via Mysore and Gundlupet, which leads you directly into the Bandipur Tiger Reserve. This stretch of highway is where the journey becomes the destination. Driving slowly with your eyes peeled can reward you with sightings of deer, peacocks, monkeys, and even majestic elephants. The road continues into Kerala’s Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, part of the same contiguous forest. The final leg of the journey often involves ascending the Thamarassery Ghat road, a series of hairpin bends offering breathtaking panoramic views of the valleys below.
Essential Tips for Your Winter Road Trip
A little planning goes a long way. Before you set off for Wayanad, be aware of the strict night traffic ban through the Bandipur and Muthanga forest reserves. The gates are closed from 9 PM to 6 AM, so plan your travel time accordingly to avoid getting stranded. For both destinations, starting your drive early from Bengaluru is key to avoiding traffic and making the most of your day. While major highways are generally in excellent condition, roads within the hills can be narrow and winding. Always check your vehicle, especially the tyres and brakes, before starting. It is also wise to book your accommodation in advance, as early winter is a popular tourist season. Carry a light jacket, as the evenings in the hills can get quite chilly.
