1. Who is the source and what is the context?
Before you even analyse the pixels, investigate the messenger. Who originally posted the video? Is it a reputable news organization, a known public figure, or a brand new account with zero history? Misinformation often thrives in a context vacuum. Scrutinize
the account that shared it. Look at its posting history, its follower count, and the type of content it usually promotes. Furthermore, ask if the video is presented as breaking news, a joke, or political commentary. If it claims to be news, check to see if trusted, independent media outlets are also reporting it. A lack of corroboration is a major red flag. Prioritizing source verification over simply reacting to the content is the first and most crucial step in building digital literacy.
2. Do the visuals look and feel right?
Even as technology improves, AI often makes small but revealing mistakes. Pay close attention to faces, hands, and backgrounds. Look for unnatural eye movements; AI-generated characters might blink too often, too little, or at odd times. Skin can appear unnaturally smooth or blurry, especially where the face meets the hair or neck. Hands are notoriously difficult for AI to render, so watch for strange-looking fingers or awkward, stiff gestures. Also, check for inconsistencies in lighting and shadows. Do the shadows on a person's face match the lighting of the environment they're in? Sometimes, the background might be unusually blurry or distorted, a trick used to hide imperfections. Pausing the video and looking closely at these details can often reveal the digital seams.
3. Does the audio sound natural?
Our ears can often pick up on what our eyes might miss. Cloned voices can be a significant giveaway in a deepfake. Listen for a flat, monotonous tone or an emotional delivery that doesn't quite match the words being spoken. Real human speech is filled with imperfections—pauses, breaths, and slight variations in pitch. AI-generated audio can sometimes sound too clean or lack these natural fillers. Another key area to check is lip-syncing. Watch the person’s mouth closely. Does the movement perfectly align with the sound? Pay special attention to hard consonants like 'P' and 'B', which require the lips to close fully. If there's a slight mismatch or delay, it’s a sign that the audio may have been generated or manipulated separately from the video.
4. How is it trying to make you feel?
Misinformation is engineered to provoke a strong emotional response. The goal is often to make you feel outraged, frightened, or vindicated so that you share the content instantly without thinking. Before you forward that shocking video, take a moment to analyze your own reaction. Does the video seem perfectly tailored to confirm your existing beliefs or biases? Malicious deepfakes are frequently designed to trigger this kind of confirmation bias, making you less skeptical of the content itself. If a video causes an intense gut reaction, treat that feeling as a signal to slow down and be extra critical. This kind of content preys on our instincts, but a moment of self-awareness can be the best defence against being manipulated.
5. What is the potential harm in sharing?
Finally, consider the consequences. In today's digital environment, every share acts as an endorsement that amplifies a message. Ask yourself: what happens if this video is fake and I share it? Spreading deepfakes can contribute to political disinformation, financial scams, and reputational damage to real people. It can erode trust in institutions and even create a world where authentic evidence is dismissed as fake. If you have any doubt about a video's authenticity, the most responsible action is to refrain from sharing it. Adopting a 'do no harm' approach is essential. It's better to pause and potentially miss out on a viral moment than to become an unintentional part of a misinformation campaign. Correcting the record after the fact is always harder than not spreading the falsehood in the first place.
