Heritage jewellery is no longer just for special occasions. More people are wearing these beautiful, traditional pieces daily. But how do you keep your precious heirlooms safe and sparkling with frequent wear? Here’s your guide to daily care.
Know Your Jewellery's Needs
Caring for
heritage jewellery starts with understanding what it's made of, as different materials require different approaches. Polki, made of uncut diamonds, and Kundan, featuring glass stones set in lac and gold foil, are particularly delicate. Meenakari, with its vibrant enamel work, can be prone to chipping. Temple and silver jewellery have their own unique needs, primarily related to preventing tarnish. The rule is that one cleaning method does not fit all; what works for solid gold can permanently damage a Kundan set. Because many traditional pieces use lac, wax, or foil, they are extremely sensitive to moisture and chemicals.
The Golden Rules of Wearing
To minimise wear and tear, adopt a 'last on, first off' policy. Your jewellery should be the final thing you put on, after all your makeup, perfumes, lotions, and hairsprays have been applied and have dried. These products contain chemicals that can build up, dull the shine of metals and stones, and accelerate tarnishing. Similarly, make it a habit to remove your jewellery first thing when you get home. Never wear your heritage pieces while showering, swimming, exercising, or doing household chores. The moisture and chemicals from soaps, chlorine, and cleaning agents can loosen settings and cause irreversible damage.
Mastering the Gentle Clean
For pieces like Kundan and Polki, the cardinal rule is to avoid water. Never soak them. A 'dry clean' method is safest: after each wear, gently wipe the piece with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to remove skin oils and sweat. For dust caught in crevices, use a very soft, dry brush, like a baby toothbrush, with gentle strokes. For solid gold or silver temple jewellery without delicate settings, you can use a mild soap and warm water solution. Gently scrub with a soft brush, rinse quickly, and most importantly, dry it completely before storing. Any trapped moisture will lead to tarnishing.
Smart and Safe Storage
How you store your jewellery is as important as how you clean it. The biggest enemies are moisture, air, and friction. Each piece should be stored separately to prevent scratching and tangling. Wrap items individually in soft muslin, acid-free tissue paper, or place them in anti-tarnish pouches. Store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. The bathroom is the worst place for your jewellery box due to high humidity. A great hack is to place a few silica gel packets or a piece of chalk in your storage box to absorb any excess moisture, which helps prevent tarnishing, especially for silver. A jewellery box with a soft lining and separate compartments is an ideal investment.
When to Call a Professional
While regular at-home care will keep your pieces looking great, some situations require an expert touch. If you notice a stone has become loose, a clasp is weak, or you see significant discolouration that gentle cleaning can't fix, it’s time to visit a trusted jeweller. They have the tools and expertise to perform deep cleaning and repairs without damaging delicate settings. It's a good practice to have valuable or frequently worn pieces professionally inspected once a year to catch any potential issues early, ensuring they remain in wearable condition for generations to come. Early repairs can prevent a small issue from becoming a major one.
