Why More Trains Are Running Now
July is a peak travel month in India, driven by school holidays, monsoon getaways, and festivals. This convergence often leads to a massive surge in demand for train tickets, leaving many travellers on long waiting lists. In response, Central Railway
has taken proactive steps to ease this congestion. The railway has extended the operation of 216 special services specifically to cater to this increased travel demand. This is part of a broader national strategy by Indian Railways, which planned over 18,000 special trips between April and July 2026 to ensure smoother travel during this busy period. Central Railway is one of the leading zones in this initiative, with thousands of approved trips designed to connect major hubs and reduce travel stress for millions of passengers.
Key Extended Services: North India Corridor
A significant focus of these extra services is on the high-demand routes connecting Maharashtra with Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Central Railway has extended several daily and weekly special trains to clear the rush. For instance, the Pune-Danapur Daily Special (Train No. 01449) has been extended to run until September 28, 2026, adding 75 services. Its counterpart, the Danapur-Pune Daily Special (Train No. 01450), will continue until September 30, 2026. Additionally, weekly services like the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus–Kanpur special (Train No. 04152) have also been extended through September, providing crucial connectivity for passengers travelling to and from these key northern cities.
Monsoon Timetable on the Konkan Route
Travellers heading towards Goa and the Konkan coast should take note of the monsoon timetable, which is in effect until October 20, 2026. This special schedule is implemented every year to ensure operational safety during heavy rains, which often affect the scenic but challenging Konkan Railway route. The revised timings affect dozens of trains, including popular services like the Vande Bharat and Tejas Express between Mumbai and Madgaon. For example, the Mumbai CSMT–Madgaon Vande Bharat Express (Train No. 22229) has revised arrival times, and passengers are strongly advised to check the latest schedule before their journey. While these changes are for safety, some train frequencies have also been adjusted, with certain daily services running on a tri-weekly basis during this period.
New Connectivity and Regular Services
Beyond the temporary specials, Central Railway is also adding new regular trains. On July 6, 2026, two new weekly express services were inaugurated between Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) in Mumbai and Hazur Sahib Nanded. This move provides a long-term enhancement to connectivity within Maharashtra. These new routes, combined with the extension of hundreds of special trains, demonstrate a concerted effort by the railways to not only manage seasonal demand but also strengthen the overall network for passenger convenience.
How to Book and Plan Your Trip
With these numerous additions and changes, planning is key. Bookings for the extended special train services opened in early July and are available through all computerised reservation centres and the official IRCTC website (www.irctc.co.in). For unreserved coaches, tickets can be purchased via the UTS mobile app. Given the dynamic nature of the monsoon schedule and special services, passengers are consistently advised to check the final train timings and running status before embarking on their journey. Using official railway apps and websites is the most reliable way to get real-time information and avoid any last-minute surprises, ensuring your July travel is as smooth and flexible as possible.
