The Science of Sweat
Your body has a brilliant, built-in cooling system: sweating. As you exercise, your core temperature rises, and your body produces sweat. The magic happens when that sweat evaporates from your skin, taking heat with it and cooling you down. However, high
humidity throws a spanner in the works. When the air is already saturated with moisture, as it often is during India’s monsoon season, your sweat has nowhere to go. It can't evaporate efficiently. As a result, sweat just sits on your skin, and your body’s primary cooling mechanism becomes much less effective, causing your internal temperature to rise further.
The Cardiovascular Cost
Since your body is struggling to cool down via evaporation, it has to find another way. It does this by pumping more blood to the skin's surface to help release heat. This puts extra strain on your cardiovascular system. Your heart has to work harder, which is why your heart rate might seem unusually high for the same level of effort. This increased cardiovascular strain means your body is under significantly more stress during the workout, which burns through your energy stores faster and leads to quicker fatigue.
The Recovery Tax
The extra work your body does during a humid workout directly impacts your recovery. Because you sweat more profusely in a desperate attempt to cool down, you lose more fluids and essential minerals called electrolytes, like sodium and potassium. This can quickly lead to dehydration and an electrolyte imbalance, which are major culprits behind post-workout fatigue, muscle cramps, and headaches. Simply put, the greater stress placed on your body during the session means it needs more time and resources to repair and return to a normal state afterwards.
Hydrate Smarter, Not Harder
Proper hydration is your first line of defence. In humid conditions, thirst isn't always a reliable indicator of your body's needs; by the time you feel thirsty, you may already be dehydrated. Aim to drink water consistently throughout the day, not just during your workout. Before a session, drink a couple of glasses of water. For workouts lasting over an hour, consider a sports drink or coconut water to replenish lost electrolytes. Afterwards, continue to rehydrate to replace the fluids you've lost. You can even weigh yourself before and after a workout to get a precise measure of fluid loss to guide your rehydration.
Adjust Your Expectations and Training
Instead of fighting the humidity, adapt to it. Accept that you may not be able to perform at your peak. It’s wise to reduce the intensity or duration of your workouts, especially when you are not yet accustomed to the conditions. Consider shifting your exercise to cooler parts of the day, like the early morning or late evening. Pay attention to how your body feels rather than focusing strictly on pace or numbers. A slower run in high humidity can be just as taxing as a faster run on a cool day. If possible, training indoors in an air-conditioned space is a great alternative.
Dress for Success and Cool Down
Your choice of clothing can make a surprising difference. Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-coloured apparel. Moisture-wicking fabrics are far superior to cotton as they help pull sweat away from your skin. A proper cool-down is also crucial. Don't just stop abruptly. Spend some time doing light stretching or walking to allow your heart rate to come down gradually. This helps your body begin the recovery process more effectively. After your workout, refueling with cool foods and drinks can also help bring your core temperature down.
